Awala-Yalimapo
Awala-Yalimapo () is a commune on the north coast of French Guiana, close to the border with Suriname. The seat of the commune is the settlement of Awala where the town hall is located. Other settlements in the commune are: Yalimapo, Ayawande, and Piliwa. The majority of the inhabitants are Kaliña Amerindian people. History The Kalina people have been living along the Maroni River since before the European colonization. In 1596, Lawrence Kemys noted that Iaremappo, a big village, was located near the mouth of the river. European diseases reduced the number of Kalinas in the area to several hundred in the mid 19th century. In 1858, the Hattes penal colony was established in the region and operated until 1950. In the late 1940s, Amerindians from Pointe Isère founded the village of Awala. In 1950, families from Ayawande and Galibi in Suriname founded the village of Yalimapo. Maroni River
The Maroni () or Marowijne (; ) is a river in South America that forms the border between French Guiana and Suriname. Course The Maroni runs through the Guianan moist forests ecoregion. It originates in the Tumuk Humak Mountains and forms the (disputed) border between France (region of French Guiana) and Suriname. In its upper reaches, it is also known as the Lawa, and close to its source it is known as the Litani. The total length of Litani, Lawa and Maroni is . Amana Nature Reserve
The Amana Nature Reserve ( French: ''Réserve naturelle nationale de l'Amana'') is a nature reserve in French Guiana, France. It has been protected because it is one of the world's largest leatherback sea turtle nesting sites. It is part of the communes of Awala-Yalimapo and Mana. Environment The nature reserve stretches from the Maroni to the . The reserve consists of beaches, mangrove forests, swamps and savannas. Turtles Leatherback sea turtles need very specific nesting beaches, and return to the same beach every two to three years. It is a vulnerable species with a limited number of suitable beaches. The neighbouring Wia Wia Nature Reserve in Suriname was used by the turtles as well until the beach shifted resulting in the disappearance of the turtles. The beaches at Amana were home to 5,029 to 63,294 nests between 1967 and 2005. The turtles lay their eggs between March and July, digging a hole in the sand in which they lay 80 to 90 eggs.
