Pohjois-Pohjalainen Osakunta
North Ostrobothnian Nation ( fi, Pohjois-Pohjalainen Osakunta, PPO) is one of the 15 student nations at the University of Helsinki. PPO is Finnish-speaking and established in 1907. Originally formed by students from the northern former Oulu and Lapland Provinces, the nation now accepts anyone studying in the Helsinki region as a member. PPO formed the historical Pohjalainen Osakunta, or Österbottniska Nationen (''Latin: Natio Ostrobothniensis''), together with Etelä-Pohjalainen Osakunta and Vasa nation. Established in 1643, it was one of the original nations at the Royal Academy of Turku, moving to Helsinki in 1828 with the relocation of the university. PPO still has close ties with the other Ostrobothnian nations. Together, they share the Ostrobotnia House (pictured) in central Helsinki, one of several buildings owned by different student organizations in the city. Nations At Finnish Universities
In Finland, student nations (in Finnish, sg. osakunta, pl. osakunnat; in Swedish (student)nation) are student organisations within which a large proportion of extra-curricular student activity takes place. Though membership is not compulsory, the nations provide one of the main nodes of student social life, along with the faculty-based organisations (''ainejärjestöt'') at the universities. The first Finnish student nations were originally established at The Royal Academy of Turku. When the Academy moved to Helsinki after the Great Fire of Turku taking the name Imperial Alexander University in Finland, the nations moved along with it. Lapland Province
The Province of Lapland ( fi, Lapin lääni, sv, Lapplands län) was a Provinces of Finland, province of Finland from 1938 to 2009. It was established in 1938, when it was separated from the Province of Oulu. After the Second World War, the Pechengsky District, Petsamo municipality (former province) and part of the Salla municipality were ceded to the Soviet Union. The Royal Academy of Turku or the Royal Academy of Åbo ( sv, Kungliga Akademin i Åbo or ; la, Regia Academia Aboensis; fi, Turun akatemia) was the first university in Finland, and the only Finnish university that was founded when the country still was a part of Sweden. Ostrobothnia, sv, Österbotten (literally "Eastern Bottom", "botten" deriving from Old Norse ''botn'' in the meaning of 'bay', and Latinized "bothnia"), fi, Pohjanmaa (literally "Bottom (low) lands" or alternatively "Northland") is a historical province comprising a large western and northern part of modern Finland (which was then the eastern half of Sweden). The Student Union of the University of Helsinki ( fi, Helsingin yliopiston ylioppilaskunta, HYY, sv, Studentkåren vid Helsingfors universitet, HUS) was founded in 1868.
