Poet Laureate
A poet laureate (plural: poets laureate) is a poet officially appointed by a government or conferring institution, typically expected to compose poems for special events and occasions. Albertino Mussato of Padua and Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch) of Arezzo were the first to be crowned poets laureate after the classical age, respectively in 1315 and 1342. In Britain, the term dates from the appointment of Bernard André by Henry VII of England. The royal office of Poet Laureate in England dates from the appointment of John Dryden in 1668. In modern times a poet laureate title may be conferred by an organization such as the Poetry Foundation, which designates a Young People's Poet Laureate, unconnected with the National Youth Poet Laureate and the United States Poet Laureate. The office is also popular with regional and community groups. Carl Sennhenn
Carl Braun Sennhenn is an American writer and academic who served from as the 14th Poet Laureate of Oklahoma from 2001 until 2003. Along with Francine Ringold, he is one of two poets to win the Oklahoma Book Award for Poetry twice, in 2007 and in 2013. He is a former professor at Rose State College, where he also served as a Dean of Humanities. Early life and education Sennhenn was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Norman, Oklahoma. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Oklahoma, in 1958 and 1960 respectively. Career Sennhenn has worked as an educator for over 60 years, from the elementary to college level. Julie Ann Ward (born in Antlers, Oklahoma) is the first poet laureate of Norman, Oklahoma. Norman was the first city in Oklahoma to appoint a poet laureate. The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress—commonly referred to as the United States Poet Laureate—serves as the official poet of the United States. During their term, the poet laureate seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry. The position was modeled on the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. Begun in 1937, and formerly known as the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, the present title was devised and authorized by an Act of Congress in 1985. Jay Snider (poet)
Jay Snider is the current poet laureate of Oklahoma, serving from 2023 to 2024. He writes in the cowboy poetry genre. He is the third cowboy poet to be appointed Oklahoma state poet laureate after his predecessors Joe Kreger and Eddie Wilcoxen. He was previously named Lariat Laureate by CowboyPoetry.com in 2001 and Cowboy Poet of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists in 2008. He resides in Cyril, Oklahoma and works as a rancher. Jeanetta Calhoun Mish
Jeanetta Calhoun Mish (born 1961) is an American poet and served as Oklahoma's twenty-first poet laureate. Biography Born in Hobart, Oklahoma in 1961, Mish was educated at the University of Houston, the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, and the University of Oklahoma, where she earned her doctorate in 2009. She is a faculty member in the Red Earth MFA in creative writing at Oklahoma City University, which she also serves as program director. Benjamin Myers (poet)
Benjamin Myers (born 1975) is an American poet, essayist, educator, and musician. In 2015, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin appointed Myers the twentieth poet laureate of Oklahoma. He has written three books of poetry, and his poems have appeared in many nationally prominent periodicals. Biography Myers was raised in Chandler, Oklahoma, by parents who were both writers themselves, his mother being well-known young-adult novelist Anna Myers and his father writing poetry. Myers earned his bachelor's in English from The University of the Ozarks and his Ph.D. in literature from Washington University in St. Louis. Myers teaches at Oklahoma Baptist University, where he is the Crouch-Mathis Professor of Literature. Myers has written essays on poetry and on liberal arts education for several Oklahoma-based magazines, such as ''Oklahoma Today'' and Oklahoma Humanities, as well as for national conservative magazines ''First Things'' and ''The Imaginative Conservative.'' Nathan Brown (poet)
Nathan Brown is an author, singer-songwriter, and award-winning poet who served as the Oklahoma Poet Laureate from 2013 to 2014. Life Nathan Brown was born in Longview, Texas on March 16, 1965. His family moved to Norman, Oklahoma in January 1970, where he grew up and went to college. He now hails from Wimberley, a small town in the Hill Country of Texas where he has lived with his wife, Ashley, since 2013. Nathan holds an interdisciplinary PhD in English and Journalism with an emphasis in Creative and Professional Writing from the University of Oklahoma. After teaching at OU for almost twenty years, he returned to the Austin area to be closer to the music scene there and tours the country full-time as a poet, musician, and workshop leader. Eddie Wilcoxen
Eddie D. Wilcoxen (born 1949) served as the eighteenth poet laureate of the state of Oklahoma, appointed by Governor Brad Henry. Previous to his appointment, Wilcoxen was well known as a broadcaster with KWHW (AM) in Altus, Oklahoma. Wilcoxen's poetry is best classified as "folk" poetry, with an emphasis on rural life and traditions. Wilcoxen was also an accomplished karateka, training under the accomplished karateka and kickboxer, Joe Lewis.
