Pleasant Valley, Grant County, Wisconsin
British Hollow is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community originally located in the northeastern corner of the political subdivisions of Wisconsin#Towns, Town of Potosi (town), Wisconsin, Potosi, Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. History The first white residents were Terence Coyle and his family, who built a cabin there and were in permanent occupancy by the spring of 1832. In 1836, when Grant County was organized, it was made a separate minor civil division, precinct from the rest of Potosi, and named Pleasant Valley, a name which it still held at the time of the passage of the original (1848) Constitution of Wisconsin. It is unclear where the name "British Hollow" came from; it may have been to distinguish this settlement from the nearby Dutch Hollow, Wisconsin, Dutch Hollow, whose inhabitants were primarily German people, Germans in origin. At one time British Hollow (sometimes shortened to British) (which by 1848 also included most of Harrison, Grant County, Wi ... Constitution Of Wisconsin
The Constitution of the State of Wisconsin is the governing document of the U.S. State of Wisconsin. It establishes the structure and function of state government, describes the state boundaries, and declares the rights of state citizens. The Wisconsin Constitution was written at a constitutional convention held in Madison, Wisconsin, in December 1847 and approved by the citizens of Wisconsin Territory in a referendum held in March 1848. Wisconsin was admitted to the United States on May 29, 1848. Although it has been amended over a hundred times, the original constitution ratified in 1848 is still in use. This makes the Wisconsin Constitution the oldest U.S. state constitution outside of New England. Only Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Rhode Island use older constitutions. The current Wisconsin Constitution contains a brief preamble and fourteen articles detailing the state government, its powers, and its limitations. Creation of the Wisconsin Constitutio ... Minor Civil Division
A minor civil division (MCD) is a term used by the United States Census Bureau for primary governmental and/or administrative divisions of a county or county-equivalent, typically a municipal government such as a city, town, or civil township. MCDs are used for statistical purposes by the Census Bureau, and do not necessarily represent the primary form of local government. They range from non-governing geographical survey areas to municipalities with weak or strong powers of self-government. Some states with large unincorporated areas give substantial powers to counties; others have smaller or larger incorporated entities with governmental powers that are smaller than the MCD level chosen by the Census. As of 2010, MCDs exist in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. In all other states where state-defined entities are not used for census purposes (mostly in the South and the West), the Census Bureau designates Census County Divisions (CCDs). Political Subdivisions Of Wisconsin
The administrative divisions of Wisconsin include counties, cities, villages and towns. In Wisconsin, all of these are units of general-purpose local government. There are also a number of special-purpose districts formed to handle regional concerns, such as school districts. Whether a municipality is a city, village or town is not strictly dependent on the community's population or area, but on the form of government selected by the residents and approved by the Wisconsin State Legislature. Cities and villages can overlap county boundaries; for example, the city of Whitewater is located in Walworth and Jefferson counties.
