Plateaux District
The Plateaux District was a former district located in the current Mai-Ndombe Province, until no later than February 2009. However, the change was not implemented until 2015, and until then it was part of the Bandundu Province. Location The district lies on the east bank of the Congo River, just upriver from Kinshasa, with the Republic of the Congo to the west. The Kwah River separates the district into southern and northern halves . This northern half is within the Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe area, the largest Wetland of International Importance in the world, recognized by the Ramsar Convention. Ramsar Convention
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Ramsar sites (wetlands). It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the convention was signed in 1971. Every three years, representatives of the contracting parties meet as the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP), the policy-making organ of the convention which adopts decisions (resolutions and recommendations) to administer the work of the convention and improve the way in which the parties are able to implement its objectives. Mushie is a town in Mai-Ndombe Province, Mai-Ndombe province, Democratic Republic of the Congo and is the administrative center of Mushie Territories of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, territory. It lies at an elevation of 1118 ft (340 m), on the northern bank of the Kasai River at its confluence with the Fimi River. Mushie's population is roughly 33,000. Bolobo
Bolobo is a town on the Congo River in Mai-Ndombe Province in the western part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It is the administrative center of Bolobo Territory. As of 2009 it had an estimated population of 31,366. People The predominant tribe is that of the Banunu people, who originate from upriver and whose Bobangi language was the former trade language for the area. Lingala, one of the four national languages of the DRC, is now used for trading and intertribal communication. Other local tribal groupings include the Bateke (the natives of this area) and Batende, who have their own Bantu languages. Yumbi Territory
Yumbi is a town and territory of Mai-Ndombe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies on the eastern bank of the Congo River between Bolobo and Lukolela. The town of Yumbi is the headquarters of Yumbi Territory and has a population of approximately 30,000. On February 2, 2003 a tornado killed 17 people in and near the town. Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe
Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe is the largest List of Ramsar wetlands of international importance, Wetland of International Importance in the world as recognized by the Ramsar Convention. The site covers an area of in the region around Lake Tumba in the western Congo Basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This is more than twice the size of Belgium or Maryland. The vast area of forest and permanent or seasonal lakes and marshlands has great environmental and economic value. However, a rapidly growing population combined with weak and corrupt governance may be contributing to irreversible destruction. Bandundu Province
Bandundu is one of eleven former provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It bordered the provinces of Kinshasa and Bas-Congo to the west, Équateur to the north, and Kasai-Occidental to the east. The provincial capital is also called Bandundu (formerly Banningstad/Banningville). History Bandundu was formed in 1966 by merging the three post-colonial political regions: Kwilu, Kwango, and Mai-Ndombe. Under the 2006 constitution, Bandundu was to be broken up again into the aforementioned political regions. This finally took place in the 2015 repartitioning. Kwah River
The Kasai River ( ; called Cassai in Angola) is a tributary (left side) of the Congo River, located in Central Africa. The river begins in central Angola and flows to the east until it reaches the border between Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it turns north and serves as the border until it flows into the DRC. From Ilebo, between the confluences with Lulua river and Sankuru river, the Kasai river turns to a westerly direction. The lower stretch of the river from the confluence with Fimi river, is known as the Kwa(h) River, before it joins the Congo at Kwamouth northeast of Kinshasa. The Kasai basin consists mainly of equatorial rainforest areas, which provide an agricultural land in a region noted for its infertile, sandy soil.
