Henry Cranke Andrews
Henry Cranke Andrews (floruit, fl. 1794 – 1830), was an English botanist, botanical artist and engraver. As he always published as Henry C. Andrews, and due to difficulty finding records, the C. was often referred to as Charles, until a record of his marriage registration was found in 2017. He lived in Knightsbridge, and was married to Anne Kennedy, the daughter of Lee and Kennedy, John Kennedy of Hammersmith, a nurseryman who assisted Andrews in the descriptions of the plants he illustrated. He was an accomplished and unusual botanical artist, in that he was not only the artist but also the engraver, colourist, and publisher of his books in an era when most artists were only employed to draw plates. The ''Botanist's Repository'' was his first publication; issued serially in London in ten volumes between 1797 and 1812, the ''Repository'' at a half-crown an issue, provided affordable images of plants to the growing population of amateur gardeners in Britain. In biology, a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. Pitcairnia
''Pitcairnia'' is a genus of plants in the Family (biology), family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Pitcairnioideae. It was named for William Pitcairn, Scottish physician and gardener (1711–1791). The genus ''Pitcairnia'' ranks as the second most prolific of the bromeliad family (after ''Tillandsia).'' They are most abundant in Colombia, Peru and Brazil, but can also be found in areas from Cuba and Mexico south to Argentina. One species, ''Pitcairnia feliciana'', is found in tropical West Africa and is the only member of the family Bromeliaceae not native to the Americas. Almost all ''Pitcairnias'' are Terrestrial plant, terrestrial or wiktionary:saxicolous, saxicolous, and prefer moist areas. However, many are found growing epiphyte, epiphytically in trees. Endemism is the state of a species being found in a single defined geographic location, such as an island, state, nation, country or other defined zone; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic to it if they are also found elsewhere.
