Loomis (formerly Pine, Pino, Smithville, and Placer) is an incorporated town in Placer County, California, United States. It is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area. The town's population was reported as 6,836 in the 2020 census. It shares borders with the city of Rocklin and the Census-Designated Places Penryn and Granite Bay. History The Placer post office opened on the site in 1861, changed its name to Smithville in 1862, then changed it to Pino in 1869, and in 1890 the Southern Pacific Railroad finally decided on Loomis. The railroad and Post Office found that Pino was confused with the town of Reno, hence the name change to Loomis. The name Smithville honors L.G. Smith, who was one of the town's most prominent leaders. Loomis takes its name from one of the town's pioneers, James Loomis. Secret Ravine
Secret Ravine is a perennial tributary of Miners Ravine which shortly thereafter runs into Dry Creek in Placer County, California. Its course lies within the cities of Rocklin, Loomis, and Roseville, as well as unincorporated parts of Placer County. It passes through the campus of Sierra College. Over its entire length the creek runs near the Interstate 80 freeway. It is an area becoming increasingly suburbanized. It was the site of placer mining operations during the California Gold Rush, and areas of tailings remain to this day. Later the drainage was a locale for granite quarrying. History The Rocklin Cemetery is very close to the ravine. An old Indian cemetery was farther up the drainage. In 1869 some laid-off Chinese railroad workers moved to Secret Ravine to mine. Penryn is a census-designated place in Placer County, California, in the United States. Geographic location is . Penryn is located northeast of Rocklin. The population was 1150 at the 2020 census. History What became Penryn began in late 1864 when a Welsh immigrant named Griffith Griffith established a granite quarry on quarter section of land leased from the Central Pacific Railroad. A siding was completed on February 6, 1865, and the first load of cut stone was shipped less than a week later. The quarry was open for business, but as yet, had no name. The railroad, matter-of-factly, designated the siding "Griffith’s Granite Station", but Griffith had something else in mind. Rocklin is a city in Placer County, California, United States, about from Sacramento, and about northeast of Roseville in the Sacramento metropolitan area.
