Ping Gardner
Kenneth Fuller Gardner (March 5, 1899 – March 9, 1984), nicknamed "Ping", was an American Negro league pitcher in the 1920s and 1930s. A native of Washington, DC, Gardner made his Negro leagues debut in 1920 with the Brooklyn Royal Giants. He went on to play with several teams, finishing his career in 1932 with the Newark Browns. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the Baseball (ball), baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of out (baseball), retiring a batter (baseball), batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitch (baseball), pitched ball or draw a base on balls, walk. Negro League
The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". In the late 19th century, the baseball color line developed in professional baseball, excluding African Americans from league play. In 1885, the Cuban Giants formed the first black professional baseball team. The first league, the National Colored Base Ball League, was organized strictly as a minor league but failed in 1887 after only two weeks owing to low attendance.
