Pinacolborane
Pinacolborane is the borane Trihydridoboron, also known as borane or borine, is an unstable and highly reactive molecule with the chemical formula . The preparation of borane carbonyl, BH3(CO), played an important role in exploring the chemistry of boranes, as it indicated ... with the formula (CH3)4C2O2BH. Often pinacolborane is abbreviated HBpin. It features a boron hydride functional group incorporated in a five-membered C2O2B ring. Like related boron alkoxides, pinacolborane is monomeric. It is a colorless liquid. It features a reactive B-H functional group. Use in organic synthesis In the presence of catalysts, pinacolborane hydroborates alkenes and, less rapidly, alkynes. Pinacolborane also affects catalyst-free hydroboration of aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids. Pinacolborane is used in borylation, a form of C-H activation. Dehydrogenation of pinacolborane affords dipinacolatodiborane (B2pin2): :2{{nbsp(CH3)4C2O2BH → (CH3)4C2O2B-BO2C2(CH3)4 + H2 Related ...

Hydroboration
In organic chemistry, hydroboration refers to the addition of a hydrogen-boron bond to certain double and triple bonds involving carbon (, , , and ). This chemical reaction is useful in the organic synthesis of organic compounds. Hydroboration produces organoborane compounds that react with a variety of reagents to produce useful compounds, such as alcohols, amines, or alkyl halides. The most widely known reaction of the organoboranes is oxidation to produce alcohols typically by hydrogen peroxide. This type of reaction has promoted research on hydroboration because of its mild condition and a wide scope of tolerated alkenes. Another research subtheme is metal-catalysed hydroboration. The development of this technology and the underlying concepts were recognized by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Herbert C. Brown. He shared the prize with Georg Wittig in 1979 for his pioneering research on organoboranes as important synthetic intermediates. Addition of a H-B bond to C-C doubl ...

Bis(pinacolato)diboron
Bis(pinacolato)diboron is a covalent compound containing two boron atoms and two pinacolato ligands. It has the formula CH3)4C2O2Bsub>2; the pinacol groups are sometimes abbreviated as "pin", so the structure is sometimes represented as B2pin2. It is a colourless solid that is soluble in organic solvents. It is a commercially available reagent for making pinacol boronic esters for organic synthesis. Unlike some other diboron compounds, B2pin2 is not moisture-sensitive and can be handled in air. Preparation and structure This compound may be prepared by treating tetrakis(dimethylamino)diboron with pinacol Pinacol is a white solid organic compound. It is a diol that has hydroxyl groups (-OH) on vicinal carbon atoms. Preparation It may be produced by the pinacol coupling reaction from acetone: Reactions As a vicinal-diol, it can rearrange t ... in acidic conditions. The B-B bond length is 1.711(6) Å. Dehydrogenation of pinacolborane provides an alternative route: :2(CH ...

Borane
Trihydridoboron, also known as borane or borine, is an unstable and highly reactive molecule with the chemical formula . The preparation of borane carbonyl, BH3(CO), played an important role in exploring the chemistry of boranes, as it indicated the likely existence of the borane molecule. However, the molecular species BH3 is a very strong Lewis acid. Consequently, it is highly reactive and can only be observed directly as a continuously produced, transitory, product in a flow system or from the reaction of laser ablated atomic boron with hydrogen. Structure and properties BH3 is a trigonal planar molecule with D3h symmetry. The experimentally determined B–H bond length is 119  pm. In the absence of other chemical species, it reacts with itself to form diborane. Thus, it is an intermediate in the preparation of diborane according to the reaction: :BX3 +BH4− → HBX3− + (BH3) (X=F, Cl, Br, I) :2 BH3 → B2H6 The standard enthalpy of dimerization of BH3 is estim ...

Alkoxide
In chemistry, an alkoxide is the conjugate base of an alcohol and therefore consists of an organic group bonded to a negatively charged oxygen atom. They are written as , where R is the organic substituent. Alkoxides are strong bases and, when R is not bulky, good nucleophiles and good ligands. Alkoxides, although generally not stable in protic solvents such as water, occur widely as intermediates in various reactions, including the Williamson ether synthesis. Transition metal alkoxides are widely used for coatings and as catalysts. Enolates are unsaturated alkoxides derived by deprotonation of a bond adjacent to a ketone or aldehyde. The nucleophilic center for simple alkoxides is located on the oxygen, whereas the nucleophilic site on enolates is delocalized onto both carbon and oxygen sites. Ynolates are also unsaturated alkoxides derived from acetylenic alcohols. Phenoxides are close relatives of the alkoxides, in which the alkyl group is replaced by a derivative of be ...

Borylation
Metal-catalyzed C–H borylation reactions are transition metal catalyzed organic reactions that produce an organoboron compound through functionalization of aliphatic and aromatic C–H bonds and are therefore useful reactions for carbon–hydrogen bond activation. Metal-catalyzed C–H borylation reactions utilize transition metals to directly convert a C–H bond into a C–B bond. This route can be advantageous compared to traditional borylation reactions by making use of cheap and abundant hydrocarbon starting material, limiting prefunctionalized organic compounds, reducing toxic byproducts, and streamlining the synthesis of biologically important molecules. Boronic acids, and boronic esters are common boryl groups incorporated into organic molecules through borylation reactions. Boronic acids are trivalent boron-containing organic compounds that possess one alkyl substituent and two hydroxyl groups. Similarly, boronic esters possess one alkyl substituent and two ester groups. Bo ...

Catecholborane
Catecholborane (abbreviated HBcat) is an organoboron compound that is useful in organic synthesis. This colourless liquid is a derivative of catechol and a borane, having the formula C6H4O2BH. Synthesis and structure Traditionally catecholborane is produced by treating catechol with borane (BH3) in a cooled solution of THF. However, this method results in a loss of 2 mole equivalents of the hydride. Nöth and Männig described the reaction of alkali-metal boron hydride (LiBH4, NaBH4, of KBH4) with tris(catecholato)bisborane in an ethereal solvent such as diethyl ether. In 2001, Herbert Brown and coworkers prepared catecholborane by treatment of tri-''o''-phenylene bis-borate with diborane. Unlike borane itself or alkylboranes, catechol borane exists as a monomer. This behavior is a consequence of the electronic influence of the aryloxy groups that diminish the Lewis acidity of the boron centre. Pinacolborane adopts a similar structure. Reactions Catecholborane is less reactive ...

Organoboron Compounds
Organoborane or organoboron compounds are chemical compounds of boron and carbon that are organic derivatives of BH3, for example trialkyl boranes. Organoboron chemistry or organoborane chemistry is the chemistry of these compounds. Organoboron compounds are important reagents in organic chemistry enabling many chemical transformations, the most important one called hydroboration. Reactions of organoborates and boranes involve the transfer of a nucleophilic group attached to boron to an electrophilic center either inter- or intramolecularly. α,β-Unsaturated borates, as well as borates with a leaving group at the α position, are highly susceptible to intramolecular 1,2-migration of a group from boron to the electrophilic α position. Oxidation or protonolysis of the resulting organoboranes may generate a variety of organic products, including alcohols, carbonyl compounds, alkenes, and halides. Properties of the B-C bond The C-B bond has low polarity (the difference in electron ...
