David "Dav" Murray Pilkey Jr. (; born March 4, 1966) is an American cartoonist, author, and illustrator of children's literature. He is best known as the author and illustrator of the children's book series, ''Captain Underpants'', and the children's graphic novel series, ''Dog Man''. Life and career Pilkey was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 4, 1966 to the Reverend David Pilkey, Sr. and Barbara who was the church organist. He has one older sister. Pilkey was brought up in a conservative Christian household and went to Christian schools throughout his life. Pilkey was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia as a child. Walter Pilkey (1936–2007) was a professor of mechanical engineering at University of Virginia. He earned his PhD from Penn State. Clifford George (Cliff) Pilkey (27 July 1922 – 17 November 2012) was a Canadian politician and trade union leader.Shanahan, NoreenCliff Pilkey, champion of Canada’s progressive labour legislation, dies at 90 ''The Globe and Mail'', 11 December 2012. Pilkey was an autoworker and United Auto Workers leader in Oshawa's Local 222 before being elected as an Alderman on Oshawa City Council.
