Pietà (Annibale Carracci)
''Pietà'' is a c. 1600 oil on canvas painting by Annibale Carracci, the earliest surviving work by him on the subject, which was commissioned by Odoardo Farnese. It moved from Rome to Parma to Naples as part of the Farnese collection and is now in the National Museum of Capodimonte in Naples. It is one of many 16th century Bolognese paintings dedicated to the theme of the Pietà, and it is counted among Carracci's masterpieces. History The dating of this painting is owed to records of its commission by Odoardo Farnese. It is unknown, however, what its original destination was or the date of its execution. For its location, the format of the painting indicates that it might have been intended for the private devotion of its commissioner. Therefore, it would have been kept at the chapel of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome or another Farnese mansion. Annibale Carracci
Annibale Carracci (; November 3, 1560 – July 15, 1609) was an Italian painter and instructor, active in Bologna and later in Rome. Along with his brother and cousin, Annibale was one of the progenitors, if not founders of a leading strand of the Baroque style, borrowing from styles from both north and south of their native city, and aspiring for a return to classical monumentality, but adding a more vital dynamism. Painters working under Annibale at the gallery of the Palazzo Farnese would be highly influential in Roman painting for decades. Early career Annibale Carracci was born in Bologna, and in all likelihood was first apprenticed within his family. Rudolf Wittkower (22 June 1901 – 11 October 1971) was a British art historian specializing in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture, who spent much of his career in London, but was educated in Germany, and later moved to the United States. Despite having a British father who stayed in Germany after his studies, he was born and raised in Berlin. Early life Wittkower was born in Berlin to Henry Wittkower (1865–1942) and Gertrude Ansbach (Wittkower) (1876–1965). Career Rudolf Wittkower moved to London in 1933 with his wife Margot Holzmann because they were both Jewish and were fleeing Nazi Germany. Gilles Rousselet
Gilles Rousselet, also known as Aegidius Rousselet (1610–1686) was a French burin engraver, print dealer, and draftsman, active during the Baroque-era. He was one of the most skilled engravers of the seventeenth century and a member of the Académie. About Gilles Rousselet, born in 1610 in Paris, France. His father was a bookseller and possibly a printmaker. It is unknown with whom he studied engraving under, but his work was inspired by Abraham Bloemaert.
