Pierre Garat (civil Servant)
Pierre Garat (11 April 1919 – 5 November 1976) was a high-level civil servant of Vichy France. From 25 August 1943, he was the head of the service for the Jewish question for the Gironde. He was a member of the UJPF (a section of the PPF) and (according to the CDL for the Gironde) a member of the Petainist organisation "Les Amis du Maréchal" (The Marshal's Friends). In August 1943, Pierre Garat was made director of the cabinet of Pierre-René Gazagne, Préfet of Landes. On the liberation of Bordeaux, his dossier was examined by the Comité départemental de libération for the Gironde, who put him and Maurice Papon on its list of people to separate from state service. Nevertheless, he was made sous-préfet at Dax in August 1944, then at Blaye Blaye (; oc, Blaia ) is a commune and subprefecture in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. Pierre-Jean Garat
Pierre-Jean Garat (25 April 1764 – 1 March 1823) was a French Basque singer and nephew of Dominique Joseph Garat. He was born in Ustaritz. Garat devoted himself from an early age to the cultivation of his musical talents. Because he professed a distaste for the legal profession, which his father wished him to pursue, he was deprived of his allowance, but through the patronage of a friend he obtained the office of secretary to Comte d'Artois, and was afterwards engaged to give musical lessons to the queen of France. At the beginning of the Revolution he accompanied Rode to England, where the two musicians appeared together in concerts. He returned to Paris in 1794. After the Revolution he became a professional singer and was thrown into prison for a song he composed about the misfortunes of the royal family. Maurice Papon
Maurice Papon (; 3 September 1910 – 17 February 2007) was a French civil servant who led the police in major prefectures from the 1930s to the 1960s, before he became a Gaullist politician. When he was secretary general for the police in Bordeaux during World War II, he participated in the deportation of more than 1,600 Jews. He is also known for his activities in the Algerian War (1954–1962), during which he tortured insurgent prisoners as prefect of the Constantinois department, and ordered, as prefect of the Paris police, the deadly repression of a pro- National Liberation Front (FLN) demonstration against a curfew that he had "advised." In 1961, Maurice Papon was personally awarded the Legion of Honour by French President Charles de Gaulle, whose government had been struggling with the FLN insurgency. Blaye
Blaye (; oc, Blaia ) is a commune and subprefecture in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. For centuries, Blaye was a particularly convenient crossing point for those who came from the north and went to Bordeaux or further south, to Spain and Portugal. Fortified since antiquity, this eminently strategic site located on the bank of a large river, was modernized at the end of the 17th century, thanks to Vauban. In 1685, the ''Commissaire general des fortifications'' of Louis XIV proposed the construction of a real lock on the Gironde in order to "take control of the river" and to hold Bordeaux in case of a revolt.
