Pierre Benoit (MLA)
Pierre Benoit (30 April 1824 – 26 August 1870) was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. He practised his profession as a notary in Saint-Rémi, Quebec Saint-Rémi is a city in the province of Quebec, Canada. Located on the south-shore of the Saint Lawrence River and the Island of Montreal. Saint-Rémi is part of Les Jardins-de-Napierville Regional County Municipality, in the Montérégie admin ... from 1846 to 1861. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Napierville in a by-election in 1862, representing the Parti rouge; he was defeated in 1863. He was elected to the first Legislative Assembly of Quebec in the 1867 general election for the Quebec Liberal Party in Napierville. He died in office. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. When the Assembly was renamed so too was the title of its presiding officer, becoming known as the President. Today, Quebec has a unicameral legislature, whose single house is the National Assembly. Napierville (provincial Electoral District)
Napierville was a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada). Its final election was in 1919. It disappeared in the 1923 election and its successor electoral district was Napierville-Laprairie. Laurent-David Lafontaine
Laurent-David Lafontaine (August 10, 1823 – February 20, 1892) was a physician and political figure in Quebec. He represented Napierville in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1870 to 1881 as a Liberal. He was born in Saint-Philippe, Lower Canada, the son of François Lafontaine and Marie Coupal, and was educated at the Collège de Montréal. He qualified to practice as a doctor in 1846 and set up practice in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Saint-Édouard. Lafontaine was also agent for the seigneury of Saint-Georges. He was mayor of Saint-Édouard, warden for Napierville County and secretary-treasurer for the Saint-Édouard school board. He served as Liberal Party whip in 1881. Lafontaine was married three times: to Cécile Daigneau in 1850, to Edwidge Singer in 1857 and to Clémence Lemay, dit Delorme in 1868. The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP; french: Parti libéral du Québec, PLQ) is a provincial political party in Quebec. It has been independent of the federal Liberal Party of Canada since 1955. The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was the lower house of the legislature for the Province of Canada, which consisted of the former provinces of Lower Canada, then known as Canada East and later the province of Quebec, and Upper Canada, then known as Canada West and later the province of Ontario. It was created by The Union Act of 1840. Canada East and Canada West each elected 42 members to the assembly. The upper house of the legislature was called the Legislative Council. The Red Party (french: Parti rouge, or french: Parti démocratique) was a political group that contested elections in the Eastern section of the Province of Canada. It was formed around 1847 by radical French-Canadians inspired by the ideas of Louis-Joseph Papineau, the '' Institut canadien de Montréal'', and the reformist movement led by the Parti patriote of the 1830s. The Red Party did not experience electoral success in the same manner as the Blue Party, their electoral rivals in Canada East. Because of their anti-clerical beliefs, the Red Party was condemned by the Catholic Church, contributing to their lack of electoral success.
