Nyons (; See mistralian norm, and classical norm of Provençal.) is a commune in the Drôme department in southeastern France. French Frigate Bellone (1778)
''Bellone'' was an 32-gun frigate of the French Navy on plans by Léon-Michel Guignace. She took part in the American Revolutionary War in the Indian Ocean with the squadron under Suffren, and later in the French Revolutionary Wars. She was present at the Glorious First of June. The British Royal Navy captured her in 1798 and commissioned her as HMS ''Proserpine''. She never went to sea and was broken up in 1806. French Corvette Naïade (1780)
''Naïade'' was a 20-gun ''Coquette''-class corvette. She took part in the Indian theatre of the Anglo-French War with the squadron under Suffren. The British Royal Navy captured her in 1783 but never commissioned her; it sold her in 1784. French service On 11 February 1782, ''Naïade'' departed Brest. She called Isle de France ( Mauritius) and arrived at Cuddalore on 10 March 1782 to support the squadron under Suffren. In November 1782, she was at Ceylon under Costebelle. Battle Of Cuddalore (1783)
The Battle of Cuddalore was a naval battle between a British fleet, under Admiral Sir Edward Hughes with Admiral L.J. Weiland, and a smaller French fleet, under the Bailli de Suffren, off the coast of India during the American Revolutionary War. This war sparked the Second Mysore War in India. In the battle, taking place near Cuddalore on 20 June 1783, Suffren commanded the engagement from the frigate ''Cléopâtre'' and won what is generally considered a victory.Palmer p.161 Peace had already been agreed upon in Europe, but that news had yet to reach India, making this the final battle of the war. On the death of French ally Hyder Ali, the British decided to retake Cuddalore. They marched troops from Madras, and began preparing for a siege. French Frigate Consolante (1775)
''Consolante'' was a 40-gun frigate of the French Navy, second ship of her class. She is notable as one of the earliest attempts at building a frigate armed with 24-pounders on the artillery deck, rather than the 18-pounders typical of the day. Career Although ''Consolante'' was designed to carry 24-pounders on her battery, on 2 February 1776 Lorient was ordered to arm her with 18-pounder long guns. On 4 April 1777, Captain Boudin de Tromelin took command. In 1778, she was sent to India under Captain La Motte-Vauvert, and was part of the defences of Isle de France (Mauritius).
