Pictures At An Exhibition (ballet)
''Pictures at an Exhibition'' is a ballet choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky to Mussorgsky's eponymous score. The ballet premiered on October 2, 2014 at the David H. Koch Theater, danced by the New York City Ballet. Production Ratmansky's ''Pictures at an Exhibition'' is performed by five men and five women. The original cast includes Wendy Whelan, who had created roles in every Ratmansky's works for the New York City Ballet at that point, and was scheduled to retire from ballet at the end of the season. The score by Mussorgsky is about a posthumous exhibition of works by Viktor Hartmann. Alexei Ratmansky
Alexei Osipovich Ratmansky (russian: Алексей Осипович Ратманский, born August 27, 1968) is a Russian-American choreographer and former ballet dancer. From 2004 to 2008 he was the director of the Bolshoi Ballet. He left Russia in 2008. As of April 2014 he was the artist in residence at the American Ballet Theatre. Training and performance career Ratmansky was born in St. Petersburg and trained under Pyotr Pestov and Alexandra Markeyeva at the Bolshoi Ballet School. He graduated in 1986. He then danced in Kyiv and was a principal dancer with the Ukrainian National Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet. Abi Stafford
Abi Stafford is an American ballet dancer. She joined the New York City Ballet in 2000 and was promoted to principal dancer in 2007. She retired in 2021. Early life Stafford was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She started ballet when she was six. In 1998, she was admitted to the School of American Ballet in New York City as a full-time student. Career Stafford became an apprentice with the New York City Ballet in November 1999. Two months later, she became a member of the corps de ballet. Stafford received the Janice Levin Dancer Award in 2000-01, which was given to promising corps dancers of NYCB. Stafford was promoted to soloist in 2002 and principal dancer in 2007. Sterling Hyltin
Sterling Hyltin is an American ballet dancer. She is currently a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet. Early life and training Hyltin was born in Amarillo, Texas. She wanted to be an ice skater, and would train before school started. However, Hyltin's mother also enrolled her to ballet classes. When she was 12, she auditioned for School of American Ballet, but was rejected. She was ultimately accepted by SAB's summer program in 2000, and stayed in New York as a full-time student. Career Hyltin became an apprentice with New York City Ballet in 2002, and became a member of the corps de ballet the following year. Amar Ramasar
Amar Ramasar (born 1981) is an American ballet dancer and former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet (NYCB). Ramasar joined the NYCB as an apprentice in 2000 and joined the corps de ballet in 2001. As of 2010, Ramasar remained the only person of color who was a principal in NYCB. In 2018, Ramasar was fired from NYCB for sharing explicit pictures of female dancers without their knowledge or consent. In 2019, he made his debut at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome. That same year, a union arbitrator ruled that, while suspension from NYCB was fitting, his firing was too severe a punishment. Gonzalo Garcia (dancer)
Gonzalo Garcia is a Spanish American ballet dancer. He joined the San Francisco Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to principal in 2002, at age 22. In 2007, he left the company and joined the New York City Ballet. He retired from performing in 2022 and remains in the company as a repertory director. Early life Garcia was born in Zaragoza, and trained at Maria de Avila's school. In 1995, he attended a summer intensive at the San Francisco Ballet School, where de Avila's daughter Lola taught.
