Pickering—Ajax—Uxbridge was a provincial electoral district in central Ontario, Canada that elected one Member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. It was created in 1999 from Durham West and Durham—York. It was abolished in 2007 with the territory rolled into Ajax—Pickering, Durham and Pickering—Scarborough East. The riding included all of Pickering and Uxbridge plus all of Ajax north of Finch Avenue. Ajax (; 2021 Canadian census, 2021 population: 126,666) is a town in Regional Municipality of Durham, Durham Region in Southern Ontario, Canada, located in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area. Dave Ryan (politician)
David Ryan (born c. 1946) is a Canadian politician. He was the mayor of Pickering, Ontario from 2003 to 2022, and was the longest serving mayor of the city. As mayor, he also sits on Durham Regional Council. Career Ryan moved to Pickering in 1985. He worked in general business and management at IBM for 33 years before retiring to run for mayor of Pickering in 2003. Ryan was elected to Pickering City Council for the first time in 1994. Ryan ran for the Ontario Liberal Party in the riding of Pickering—Ajax—Uxbridge in the 1999 Ontario general election, but lost to Progressive Conservative Janet Ecker by nearly 12,000 votes. After mayor Wayne Arthurs retired in 2003, Ryan ran against regional councillor Doug Dickerson for mayor of the city. The 2003 Ontario general election was held on October 2, 2003, to elect the 103 members of the 38th Legislative Assembly (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario, Canada. Wayne Arthurs (politician)
Wayne Arthurs (born ) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2003 to 2011 who represented the ridings of Pickering—Ajax—Uxbridge and Pickering—Scarborough East. Background Arthurs has a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toronto. He worked as a teacher and a guidance counsellor. Janet Ecker (born October 18, 1953) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. She was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1995 to 2003, and was a senior cabinet minister in the governments of Mike Harris and Ernie Eves. Background Ecker grew up in Exeter, Ontario. Her father was a family physician. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Western Ontario. In 1985, Ecker served as Director of Communications at the Ontario Treasury. Finch Avenue is an arterial thoroughfare that travels east–west in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The road continues west into the Regional Municipality of Peel as Regional Road 2 and east into the Regional Municipality of Durham as Regional Road 37. The road is considered a high-density transit corridor by Metrolinx. Uxbridge is a township in the Regional Municipality of Durham in south-central Ontario, Canada. Communities The main centre in the township is the namesake community of Uxbridge. Pickering (2021 population 99,186) is a city located in Southern Ontario, Canada, immediately east of Toronto in Durham Region.
