Pichincha Province, Ecuador
Pichincha () is a province of Ecuador located in the northern Sierra region; its capital and largest city is Quito. It is bordered by Imbabura and Esmeraldas to the north, Cotopaxi and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas to the south, Napo and Sucumbíos to the east, and Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas to the west. Prior to 2008, the canton Santo Domingo de los Colorados was part of the Pichincha Province. It has since become its own province, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. The province is home to many rose plantations, which make up the bulk of Ecuador's floriculture industry. Administrative divisions The province is divided into eight cantons. Cayambe (city)
Cayambe is an agricultural service city (population 39,028 at the last census on November 28, 2010) in highland Ecuador. It lies at the foot of the Cayambe volcano. While the city is mainly peopled by mestizos, the surrounding rural population is primarily composed of indigenous people who are mainly involved in subsistence agriculture, dairy farming and procurement of lumber. It is the third-largest city in Pichincha Province. History Cayambe's indigenous people of today are descendants of the pre-Inca Kayambi people. The Kayambi were resistant to Inca expansion and were only definitively conquered by Huayna Capac (the eleventh Sapa Inca of the Inca Empire) after a bloody 20-year war. At that time, the Kayambi people adopted the Kichwa language, a dialect of the Quechua family of languages. San Miguel de los Bancos, or simply Los Bancos, is a canton in the province of Pichincha, Ecuador. The long name of the town refers to dedication of the area to the archangel Michael. Local tradition attributes the "Los Bancos" part of the name to the use of tree trunks as benches at the junction of the through road from Quito to Esmeraldas with the road into the Rio Blanco valley. Geography The canton is in the Guayllabamba river basin, which, in turn, is part of the river basin of the Esmeraldas river, which flows into the Pacific Ocean. The climate of the canton is subtropical because of its mid-high elevation, as opposed to the climate of higher elevation in the province between the Western and Central Cordilleras, which enclose the highlands of the Ecuadorian Andes. Sangolquí
Sangolquí is a suburb of Quito and is the seat of Rumiñahui canton in the province of Pichincha, in northern Ecuador. It is connected to Quito by the ''Autopista General Rumiñahui'' ( General Rumiñahui Highway). The city is home to the prestigious university ESPE, one of the best universities in Ecuador. It is also home to Colegio Liceo del Valle, Colegio Antares, Liceo Naval Quito and "Émile Jaques-Dalcroze" High School, which offers International Baccalaureate and is an authorized centre for University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Rumiñahui Canton
Rumiñahui (in Hispanicized spelling, ) or Rumiñawi (Quechua ''rumi'' stone, ''ñawi'' eye, "stone eye") is a canton of Pichincha Province in Ecuador. Its seat is Sangolquí. The canton lies southeast of Quito Canton and forms a suburb of Quito. Rumiñahui was named a ''Pueblo Mágico'' by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) in 2020. It was the first canton in Pichincha to be awarded that distinction. Quito, officially the Metropolitan District of Quito ( es, Distrito Metropolitano de Quito), is a canton in the province of Pichincha, Ecuador. Governance The canton is governed by the same mayor and city council that govern the city of Quito. Population figures According to the 2001 census, the total population of Quito (not the city itself) is 1,839,853, with 892,570 men and 947,283 women. According to the 2007 estimates, it is 1,840,000. Puerto Quito
Puerto Quito is a town and urban parish in the province of Pichincha, Ecuador. The town is a developing area for eco-tourism, thanks to an abundance of wildlife, secondary jungle and beautiful waterfalls such as the Cascada Azul (Blue Waterfall). Puerto Quito is situated beside a major bridge over the river Caoní on the main road from Quito to the coast. By road, Quito is 140 km or 3.5 hours by bus.
