Rumiñahui Canton
Rumiñahui (in Hispanicized spelling, ) or Rumiñawi (Quechua ''rumi'' stone, ''ñawi'' eye, "stone eye") is a canton of Pichincha Province in Ecuador. Its seat is Sangolquí. The canton lies southeast of Quito Canton and forms a suburb of Quito. Rumiñahui was named a ''Pueblo Mágico'' by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) in 2020. It was the first canton in Pichincha to be awarded that distinction. Pueblos Mágicos (Ecuador)
The ''Programa Pueblos Mágicos'' (Spanish: weβloˈmaxiko(listen); "Magical Towns Programme") is an initiative led by Ecuador's Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR). The program seeks to promote tourism in a network of small and mid-sized towns that represent aspects of Ecuador's cultural heritage, and to encourage sustainable economic development in these communities. It is based on the Mexican government's program of the same name. The network was first established in 2019, with an inaugural class of 5 municipalities. As of 16 March 2021, there were 21 designated ''Pueblos Mágicos'', distributed among 14 of Ecuador's 24 provinces. Rumiñawi (Inca Warrior)
Rumiñawi, born late 15th century in present-day Ecuador, died June 25, 1535, was a general during the Inca Civil War. After the death of Emperor Atahualpa, he led the resistance in 1533 against the Spanish in the northern part of the Inca Empire (modern-day Ecuador). According to tradition, he ordered the city's treasure to be hidden and the city burned to prevent looting by the Spaniards. Although captured and tortured, he never revealed the treasure. Since 1985, December 1 is celebrated as a day of commemoration of his acts. Life Born in Pillaro in modern Tungurahua Province in Ecuador, his given name was Ati II Pillahuaso. Inca historians tend to believe that he was Atahualpa's half-brother, born from a native noble woman. Sangolquí Parish
Sangolquí is a suburb of Quito and is the seat of Rumiñahui canton in the province of Pichincha, in northern Ecuador. It is connected to Quito by the ''Autopista General Rumiñahui'' ( General Rumiñahui Highway). The city is home to the prestigious university ESPE, one of the best universities in Ecuador. It is also home to Colegio Liceo del Valle, Colegio Antares, Liceo Naval Quito and "Émile Jaques-Dalcroze" High School, which offers International Baccalaureate and is an authorized centre for University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. The city also holds the football club Independiente del Valle that reached the final of the 2016 Copa Libertadores, won the 2019 and the 2022 Copa Sudamericana. Quito, officially the Metropolitan District of Quito ( es, Distrito Metropolitano de Quito), is a canton in the province of Pichincha, Ecuador. Governance The canton is governed by the same mayor and city council that govern the city of Quito. Population figures According to the 2001 census, the total population of Quito (not the city itself) is 1,839,853, with 892,570 men and 947,283 women. According to the 2007 estimates, it is 1,840,000. Of this, the population of the urban parishes (the city of Quito itself) was 1,399,378, and the population of the rural parishes (outside of the city of Quito but still within the canton) was 440,475.
