Pic Nic Railway Station
Pic Nic railway station, alternatively Pic-Nic, Pic-nic or Picnic, was a railway station in Melbourne, Australia. It was located on the Hawthorn line (now the Alamein, Belgrave and Lilydale lines), on the Melbourne side of the Hawthorn Railway Bridge, between Church Street (now East Richmond) and Hawthorn stations and served the adjacent Burnley Park. The line to the station was opened by the Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company on 24 September 1860, but was extended to Hawthorn 7 months later, with the completion of the Hawthorn Railway Bridge across the Yarra River. The station saw the sale of the line to the Victorian Railways in 1878 and the duplication to Hawthorn in 1882. The station was the scene of a serious accident on 2 December 1882, when two trains collided head-on. List Of Closed Railway Stations In Melbourne
A number of railway lines and stations which formed part of the greater Melbourne railway network have been closed over time, either in part or in full. The decision to close a railway station has historically been made by the department responsible for rail transport within the Government of Victoria. Over the history of the Melbourne railway network, a total of eleven complete railway lines, as well as 71 railway stations, have been closed. The most recent railway station to close is General Motors, which closed on 28 July 2002, due to a lack of pedestrian access; while the most recent railway line to close to traffic is the Port Melbourne railway line, which was closed on 11 October 1987, and was subsequently converted to light rail. An axle counter is a system used in railway signalling to detect the clear or occupied status of a section of track between two points. The system generally consists of a wheel sensor (one for each end of the section) and an evaluation unit for counting the axles of the train both into and out of the section. They are often used to replace a track circuit. Principles and operation An axle counter consists of the axle counter sensor, which detects the individual axles of a train either via either mechanical, electrical or even fibre optic methods, as well as an evaluator, which does the logic of the system and counts the axles into and out of the section. Melbourne And Suburban Railway Company
The Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company was a railway company in Victoria, Australia. The company opened a line from Princes Bridge railway station in Melbourne, Australia to Punt Road (Richmond) and over the Yarra River to South Yarra (then called Gardiners Creek Road) in 1859, with extensions south to Prahran in 1859 and Windsor in 1860, connecting with the 1859 St Kilda and Brighton Railway Company's line from St Kilda to Bay Street (now North Brighton), which was extended to Beach Station (now Brighton Beach) in 1861. They also built an eastward extension to Hawthorn by 1861. This company ran into difficulties almost immediately, and was bought by the Melbourne Railway Company in 1862.
