Phoenix Peak (Alaska)
Phoenix Peak is a mountain summit located in the Kenai Mountains, on the Kenai Peninsula, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The peak is situated in Kenai Fjords National Park, southwest of Mount Benson, northwest of Marathon Mountain, and west of Seward, Alaska. Precipitation runoff from the mountain and meltwater from its glaciers drains into tributaries of the Resurrection River. The first ascent of the peak was made July 23, 1964, by Don Stockard of the Mountaineering Club of Alaska. The peak was named in 1965 by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska for the first ship ever built in Russian America, the Phoenix, which was constructed in 1794 by Russians in nearby Resurrection Bay. The mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1966 by the United States Geological Survey. Kenai Mountains
The Kenai Mountains ( Dena'ina: ''Yaghanen Dghili'') are a mountain range in the U.S. state of Alaska. They extend 192 km (120 mi) northeast from the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula to the Chugach Mountains, and have an average elevation of 3,000 to 5,000 feet. The Harding and Sargent Icefields, as well as the many glaciers that emanate from them, originate in the Kenai Mountains. Several prime fish-producing rivers, including the Kenai River and the Russian River, also flow from the mountains. The Dena'ina call the mountains ''Yaghanen Dghili'', meaning "good land mountains". The name "Kenai" was first published by Constantin Grewingk in 1849, who obtained his information from I. G. Wosnesenski's account of a voyage to the area in 1842. Phoenix (1794)
''Phoenix'' (also spelled ''Feniks'') was the first ship built in Russian America (roughly equivalent to today's Alaska), for the Shelikhov-Golikov Company, a precursor of the Russian–American Company (RAC). James George Shields, a British mariner in the employ of the Russian Navy, directed her construction, using mainly local materials. The ship was launched at Voskresenskaia on Resurrection Bay in the summer of 1794. The ship was three-masted, 90 feet long, with a burthen of between 180 and 240 tons ( bm) (sources differ), and mounting 22–24 light cannons. It was by far the largest and most important vessel of any Russian American fur trading company of the time. The ship was named after the British ''Phoenix'', a trading vessel involved in the maritime fur trade, which in turn was the namesake of Phoenix Bay on Afognak Island. The Harding Icefield is an expansive icefield located in the Kenai Mountains of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. It is also partially located in Kenai Fjords National Park.
