Philly McGuinness Memorial Park
Philly McGuinness Memorial Park is a Gaelic Athletic Association, GAA Park in Mohill, County Leitrim, Ireland. It is the home of Mohill's Gaelic football, football team. It was named after Philip McGuinness, a Mohill GAA player who died after sustaining a head injury in a Senior Division 1 League game against Melvin Gaels GFC in April 2011. He was 26 years old and was an ever-present on the Leitrim GAA Senior Football team after joining the panel in 2003. On one occasion Philly also played alongside his brothers John and Michael for the Leitrim Senior Team. He was also an accomplished hurler and played for the Leitrim Hurling team. He won a Leitrim Senior Football Championship with his beloved Mohill in 2006 along with his brothers, starring at full forward. Mohill, County Leitrim
Mohill (, meaning "Soft Ground") is a town in County Leitrim, Ireland. The town of Carrick-on-Shannon is approximately 16 km (10 miles) away. History The Justinian plague of Mohill devastated the local population in the 6th century. Mohill, or ''Maothail Manachain'', is named for St. Manachan, who founded the Monastery of Mohill-Manchan here AD. Some sources and folklore say the shrine of Manchan was kept at the Monastery of Mohill-Manchan, before being moved to Lemanaghan in county Offaly for some unrecorded reason. The Monastery was taken over by Augustinians in the 13th century and was later closed in the 16th century, after the time of King Henry VIII. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Philip McGuinness
Philip McGuinness (29 February 1984 – 19 April 2010) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who was a panel member on the Leitrim county team until 2010. He died on 19 April 2010 after an accidental collision in a club game in County Leitrim. Mohill GAA club renamed its home ground the Philly McGuinness Memorial Park in his honour. Career McGuinness played with the Mohill club for his whole career and featured in their 2006 Senior Championship victory over St Mary's, the club's first title since 1971. In 2001 he was selected on the Connacht international rules football team that travelled to Australia. He also won a Connacht Vocational Schools title. In the 2009 Connacht Championship game against Roscommon he kicked two points from wing-forward. Mohill GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in Mohill, County Leitrim, Ireland. The parish of Mohill currently has two GAA Football Clubs, Mohill who play in Division 1 and the Senior Championship and Eslin who play in Division 2 and the Intermediate Championship. Melvin Gaels GFC
Melvin Gaels GFC is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in Kinlough, County Leitrim, Ireland. The club was formed on 19 November 1954. Situated in North Leitrim it is bordered by three Counties: Donegal, Fermanagh and Sligo. The club is named after Lough Melvin, a fresh-water lake. The club is based in the village of Kinlough and draws its members from the parish of Kinlough/Glenade and part of the parish of Ballaghmeehan. Contained within the four areas are Tullaghan, Askill, Rossinver, Glenaniff and Ballintrillick. Although Ballintrillick is in County Sligo, it is half the parish of Glenade and over the years it has provided many members for Melvin Gaels. There are two adult Melvin Gaels teams. The Leitrim County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae Liatroma) or Leitrim GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Leitrim. The Leitrim Senior Football Championship is an annual football competition contested by top-tier Leitrim GAA clubs.
