Philippine Sports Institute
The Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) is a sports training organization in the Philippines. It is under the Philippine Sports Commission. History The Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) was first launched in May 1996 as the Philippine Institute of Sports (PhilSports). Then President Fidel Ramos instructed then Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Philip Ella Juico to form the sports institute which was inaugurated on November that year. With the help of former PSC Chairman Perry Mequi, Philsports organized various programs. It was disestablished in 1998 by Juico's successor. Under the Republic Act 6847 of 1990, the PSC is mandated to run a sports institute alongside of maintaining a Philippine Sports Hall of Fame. The sports institute was briefly revived in 2005 by PSC Chairman William Ramirez under the administration of then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo but was made defunct by Ramirez's successor. The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC, ) is an agency of the Philippine government which tackles matters concerning sports in the country. The sports agency is independent from the Philippine Olympic Committee which enjoys autonomy from the government. History The Philippine Sports Commission was created on January 24, 1990, through Republic Act No. 6847 or "The Philippine Sports Commission Act" during the administration of then-President Corazon Aquino. Relations Philippine Olympic Committee The Philippine Sports Commission Act recognizes the role of the Philippine Olympic Committee as the national Olympic body for the International Olympic Committee. It also recognizes the autonomy of the Philippine Olympic Committee and likewise states that all National Sports Associations shall be Autonomous as well. Peping Cojuangco
José "Peping" Sumulong Cojuangco Jr. (born September 19, 1934) is a Filipino former congressman and the 9th President of the Philippine Olympic Committee from 2004 to 2018. He is a member of the influential Cojuangco political family. Early life Cojuangco was born on September 19, 1934, to José Cojuangco Sr. and Demetria Sumulong. Political career Local government official in Paniqui, Tarlac Cojuangco served as a member of the municipal council of Paniqui, Tarlac from 1955 to 1957. He became Vice Mayor of the same town in 1957 and served the term until 1959. Cojuangco was elected as Mayor of Paniqui in 1959 and served until 1961. Education In The Philippines
Education in the Philippines is provided by public and private schools, colleges, universities, and technical and vocational institutions in the country. Funding for public education comes from the national government. For the academic year 2017–2018, about 83% of K–12 students attended public schools and about 17% either attended private schools or were home-schooled. With the "trifocalization" of the educational system in the country, three government agencies handle each level of education. At the basic education level, the Department of Education (DepEd) sets overall educational standards and mandates standardized tests for the K–12 basic education system, although private schools are generally free to determine their own curriculum in accordance with existing laws and Department regulations.
