Phil Gomez
Phillip Kinteros Gomez (August 24, 1917 – August 14, 1992) was an American musician who played the clarinet. He appeared in the 1945 film ''It Happened in Harlem''. Gomez served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His record lists Sonny Dunham as his employer at the time. Gomez served He recorded with Muggsy Spanier and his Jazz Band in 1954. He also recorded the song "Quiet Village" as Phil Gomez and his Jazzbos on the album ''Dixieland Mambo''. He also recorded as part of Kid Ory's band and is with him in a 30-minute 1956 film from France. According to AllMusic, he led Phil Gomez's Swinging Kings and brought a Mexican influence to his music. According to IMDb, he plays in Ory's band in the 1956 film, ''The Benny Goodman Story''. Clarinet
The clarinet is a musical instrument in the woodwind family. The instrument has a nearly cylindrical bore and a flared bell, and uses a single reed to produce sound. ''It Happened in Harlem'' is an American musical comedy film directed by Bud Pollard and starring Chris Columbus, Phil Gomez, and Nicky O'Daniel. The film was partly shot at Smalls Paradise and released in 1945. The film includes performances by various musical acts including Dotty Rhodes and "Pitter-Patter" Pitts (Juanita Pitts). Rhodes was a dancer at the Cotton Club. Pitts was a female tap dancer who dressed and danced like a man. The 30-minute film relies on a thin plot to showcase various performers. Sonny Dunham
Elmer "Sonny" Dunham (November 16, 1911 – July 9, 1990) was an American trumpet player and bandleader. A versatile musician, he was one of the few trumpet players who could double on the trombone with equal skill. Biography Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, the son of Elmer and Ethel (''née'' Lewis) Dunham, he attended local schools and took lessons on the valve trombone at the age of 7. He changed to the slide trombone at the age of 11, and was playing in local bands by the age of 13. Dunham began his musical career as a trombone player in the Boston area. In the late 1920s he moved to New York, where he played with Ben Bernie for six months before moving on in 1929 to Paul Tremaine's Orchestra, remaining there for two years. It was while he was working with Tremaine's group, where he also sang and arranged, that he switched to the trumpet. Muggsy Spanier
Francis Joseph "Muggsy" Spanier (November 9, 1901 – February 12, 1967) was an American jazz cornetist based in Chicago. He was a member of the Bucktown Five, pioneers of the "Chicago style" that straddled traditional Dixieland jazz and swing. Life and career Spanier was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. At thirteen, he began playing the cornet and played with Elmer Schoebel in 1921. He borrowed the sobriquet of "Muggsy" from John "Muggsy" McGraw, the manager of the New York Giants baseball team. In the early 1920s, he played with the Bucktown Five. In 1929, he became a member of a band led by Ted Lewis, then spent two years with Ben Pollack. After an illness, he assembled the eight-man group Muggsy Spanier and His Ragtime Band. Kid Ory
Edward "Kid" Ory (December 25, 1886 – January 23, 1973) was an American jazz composer, trombonist and bandleader. One of the early users of the glissando technique, he helped establish it as a central element of New Orleans jazz. He was born near LaPlace, Louisiana and moved to New Orleans on his 21st birthday, to Los Angeles in 1910 and to Chicago in 1925. The Ory band later was an important force in reviving interest in New Orleans jazz, making radio broadcasts on ''The Orson Welles Almanac'' program in 1944, among other shows. In 1944–45, the group made a series of recordings for the Crescent label, which was founded by Nesuhi Ertegun for the express purpose of recording Ory's band.
