Phi Delta Gamma (social)
Phi Delta Gamma () of Puerto Rico is the first Puerto Rican organization of Greek letters, which was founded in the western town of Mayagüez, on April 25, 1942. Phi Delta Gamma originated from a high school fraternity, Alpha Iota Omega, which was founded in 1939. When the brothers of Alpha Iota Omega enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecánicas) of Mayagüez, some were offered the opportunity to pledge one of the original Puerto Rican fraternities. The others reunited in the house of the brothers Gilberto Oliver Padilla and Otis Oliver Padilla. They decided to found a new fraternity on April 25, 1942, and to use the Greek letters Phi, Delta and Gamma. Social or general fraternities and sororities, in the North American fraternity system, are those that do not promote a particular profession (as professional fraternities are) or discipline (such as service fraternities and sororities). Instead, their primary purposes are often stated as the development of character, literary or leadership ability, or to serve a more simple social purpose. Some organizations in this list have a specific major listed as a traditional emphasis. These organizations are social organizations which cater to students in those majors. The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) or Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) in Spanish (also referred to as Colegio and CAAM in allusion to its former name), is a public land-grant university in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. UPRM is the second-largest university campus of the University of Puerto Rico system. In addition to its status as a land-grant university, it is also a member of the sea-grant and space-grant research consortia. This is a list of social fraternities and sororities in Puerto Rico. There are a number of service, professional, and honorary fraternities and sororities from the United States which have chapters in Puerto Rico. The following list is composed of Greek Letter social organizations founded in Puerto Rico, by Puerto Ricans. The large majority don't have chapters outside the island. An exception to this is those organizations that are members of the Concilio Interfraternitario Puertorriqueño de la Florida, the five fraternities that are members of the CIPFI are also members of the "Concilio Interfraternitario de Puerto Rico" along with the two oldest Puerto Rican sororities, those five fraternities and two sororities are considered as being the strongest. Mayagüez (, ) is a city and the eighth-largest municipality in Puerto Rico. Juan Mari Brás
Juan Mari Brás (December 2, 1927 – September 10, 2010) was an advocate for Puerto Rican independence from the United States who founded the Puerto Rican Socialist Party (PSP). On October 25, 2006, he became the first person to receive a Puerto Rican citizenship certificate from the Puerto Rico State Department. His son, Santiago Mari Pesquera, was assassinated by a suspected far-right activist in 1976. In 2009, documents revealed the FBI had known of a plot to assassinate Mari Brás but did not share the information with him. Early years Juan Mari Brás was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico on December 2, 1927.
