The flesh is tough and woody or cork-like, and brown in color. Clamp connections are absent, and the skeletal hyphae are yellowish-brown. The name ''Phellinus'' means ''cork''. The species ''Phellinus ellipsoideus'' (previously ''Fomitiporia ellipsoidea'') produced the largest ever fungal fruit body.
