Peña (music)
A Peña is a meeting place or grouping of musicians or artists, either in Spain (where it is known as ''Peña Flamenca'') or in various South American countries. In Chile in particular, the term came to mean a cheap, popular venue where folk music was played and simple food and drink were available, usually in the form of Nueva Canción, the kind of music popularised by musicians such as Violeta Parra and Victor Jara in the 1960s and early 1970s Jara, Joan (1983). Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the western part of South America. Nueva Canción
Nueva canción (European , ; 'new song') is a left-wing social movement and musical genre in Latin America and the Iberian peninsula, characterized by folk-inspired styles and socially committed lyrics. ''Nueva canción'' is widely recognized to have played a profound role in the pro-democracy social upheavals in Portugal, Spain and Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s, and was popular amongst socialist organizations in the region. Songs reflecting conflict have a long history in Spanish, and in Latin America were particularly associated with the "''corrido''" songs of Mexico's War of Independence after 1810, and the early 20th Century years of Revolution. ''Nueva canción'' then surfaced almost simultaneously during the 1960s in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Spain. Violeta Parra
Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval (; 4 October 1917 – 5 February 1967) was a Chilean composer, singer-songwriter, folklorist, ethnomusicologist and visual artist. She pioneered the Nueva Canción Chilena (The Chilean New Song), a renewal and a reinvention of Chilean folk music that would extend its sphere of influence outside Chile. Her birthdate (4 October) was chosen "Chilean Musicians' Day". In 2011, Andrés Wood directed a biopic about her, titled ''Violeta Went to Heaven'' (Spanish: ''Violeta se fue a los cielos''). Popular Unity ( es, Unidad Popular, UP) was a left-wing political alliance in Chile that stood behind the successful candidacy of Salvador Allende for the 1970 Chilean presidential election. History Successor to the FRAP coalition, Popular Unity originally comprised most of the Chilean Left: the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, the Radical Party, the Social Democrat Party, the Independent Popular Action and MAPU (''Movimiento de Acción Popular Unitario''). They were later joined in 1971 by the Christian Left and in 1972 by the MAPU Obrero Campesino (a splinter group).
