Peterview, Newfoundland And Labrador
Peterview is a town located in the Exploits Valley area of central Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where Peters River empties into the Bay of Exploits, just south of Botwood, off Route 350. Originally named Peters Arm, the community was incorporated as the Town of Peterview in 1962. The mayor is Jim Samson and the deputy mayor is Pleman Brown. According to the 2001 Statistics Canada census, Peterview has a population of 807 with 266 private dwellings. Peterview has connections to Demasduit, also known as Mary March, a figure in Newfoundland history and one of the last Beothuks, as John Peyton, one of her captors, built the first house in the area. The Beothuk ( or ; also spelled Beothuck) were a group of Indigenous peoples in Canada, Indigenous people of Canada who lived on the island of Newfoundland (island), Newfoundland. Demasduit
Demasduit ( 1796 – January 8, 1820) was a Beothuk woman, one of the last of her people on Newfoundland. Biography Demasduit was born around 1796, near the end of the 18th century. It was once believed that the Beothuk population had been decimated by conflict with European settlers. However, the most reliable research today suggests instead that the Beothuk population was very small, between 500 and 1,000 people at the time of European contact, and when European settlers arrived permanently, the Beothuk were cut off from their traditional coastal hunting grounds. Furthermore, there was no one to promote peaceful relations between the Beothuk and the settlers. As Newfoundland's population was small, a missionary effort could not be supported, and the European governments were mainly interested in marine resources, so no agents were appointed to liaise with the native population. Newfoundland And Labrador Route 350
Route 350, commonly known as Botwood Highway, is a side highway in Central Newfoundland that leads from the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) in Bishop's Falls to Botwood, Point Leamington and Leading Tickles. It is in length and contains several side roads to communities located off the route, such as Peterview, and Route 352 that leads to Point of Bay and the Cottrell's Cove- Fortune Harbour area. Route 350-17 branches off in Point Leamington and connects the small community of Pleasantview to the main route. Route 350 continues on from Point Leamington for another 25 km north to Leading Tickles where the road officially ends.
