Peter Winser
Peter Winser (ca 1781 – October 11, 1865) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Ferryland in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1836 to 1842 and from 1848 to 1855. Winser is thought to have been born in England. He came to Aquaforte around 1815, where he established himself as a merchant. Winser was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1842. He resigned his seat in the assembly in 1855 after he was named a magistrate, serving in that function until 1863, when he was forced to retire after Edmund Hanrahan Edmund Hanrahan (1802 – February 1875) was a political figure in Newfoundland. Colony Of Newfoundland
Newfoundland Colony was an English and, later, British colony established in 1610 on the island of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada, in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That followed decades of sporadic English settlement on the island, which was at first seasonal, rather than permanent. It was made a Crown colony in 1824 and a Dominion in 1907. Its economy collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Newfoundland relinquished its dominion status, effectively becoming once again a colony governed by appointees from the Colonial Office in Whitehall in London. Ferryland
Ferryland is a town in Newfoundland and Labrador on the Avalon Peninsula. According to the 2021 Statistics Canada census, its population is 371. Seventeenth century settlement Ferryland was originally established as a station for migratory fishermen in the late 16th century but had earlier been used by the French, Spanish, and Portuguese. By the 1590s it was one of the most popular fishing harbours in Newfoundland and acclaimed by Sir Walter Raleigh. Ferryland was called "Farilham" by the Portuguese fishermen and "Forillon" by the French—it later became anglicized to its current name "Ferryland." (This should not be confused with the Forillon National Park in Quebec, which still keeps its French name.) Aquaforte, Newfoundland And Labrador
Aquaforte is a town on the south shore of Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The town's economy has always rested primarily on fishing. The harbour has been used as a seasonal fishing station since the 1670s. British and French hostilities played out in harbors all along the Avalon Peninsula in the 18th century, and Aquaforte was no exception. However, the first permanent residents did not settle in Aquaforte until the early 1800s. It is located from Ferryland and from St. John's by water. It has one of the safest harbors in the island and cod was its main industry. In 1902 a resident from Norway, Anders Ellefsen, constructed a factory to process whales in the community. The plant operated for a few years but had to shut down around 1908 because of a decline in the whale population. It was incorporated as a community in 1972. Edmund Hanrahan
Edmund Hanrahan (1802 – February 1875) was a political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Conception Bay from 1842 to 1854 and Carbonear from 1855 to 1862 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a Liberal. Hanrahan was born in Carbonear. He served in the Newfoundland cabinet as surveyor general from 1855 to 1861. Hanrahan resigned his seat in 1862 after he was named acting appraiser to the General Water Company.
