Peter P. Straub
Peter P. Straub (1850–1913) is the founder of the Straub Brewery in St. Mary's, Pennsylvania. Life and career Straub was born 28 June 1850 in Felldorf, Starzach, Kingdom of Württemberg (now in Germany), to Anton Straub and his wife, Anna Maria Eger. The Straub family had been brewing a local beer for generations. As expected Peter learned a trade important to the brewing art. He became a Cooper, a craftsman who makes wooden barrels. Peter aspired to be a brewer and at the age of 19 in 1869 immigrated to the United States for a better and more prosperous life. Straub Brewery
Straub Brewery is a historic brewery in St. Marys, Pennsylvania. In 2007, ''Fodor's Travel'' named it one of the "5 Best Places in America to Drink American Beer." History Straub Brewery was founded in 1872 by Peter Straub (1850–1913) of Felldorf, Württemberg, Germany, who purchased the Benzinger Spring Brewery from his father-in-law, Francis Xavier Sorg. Brewing continuously since that time, Straub is the third oldest family-owned brewery in the United States and is considered an American legacy brewery. It is still owned and operated by the original founding family, now in its seventh generation. Straub is also the smallest pre-Prohibition brewery still in business in the United States. Starzach
Starzach is a municipality in the district of Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Starzach is located about 20 kilometers southwest from Tübingen. Geographical location Starzach is located on the Neckar between Rottenburg am Neckar and Horb am Neckar. Two community members (Börstingen and Sulzau) are in the Neckar valley, three others (Felldorf, Bierlingen and Wachendorf) south above it. Cooper (profession)
A cooper is a person trained to make wooden casks, barrels, vats, buckets, tubs, troughs and other similar containers from timber staves that were usually heated or steamed to make them pliable. Journeymen coopers also traditionally made wooden implements, such as rakes and wooden-bladed shovels. In addition to wood, other materials, such as iron, were used in the manufacturing process. The trade is the origin of the surname Cooper. Württemberger Emigrants To The United States
The Württemberger, Baden-Württemberger or Württemberg is a Warmblood horse breed originating in Germany. They are primarily riding horses, and are selectively bred for dressage and show jumping. Breed History The breed registry studbook was founded in 1895, and around 1896, the Marbach stud began concentrating on the original Württemberger type, which was a multi-purpose horse used for both draft and under-saddle work. The original horses were produced by introducing Arabian, Trakehner, Anglo-Norman, Friesian, Spanish, Barb, and Suffolk Punch blood to local warmblood lines. An Anglo-Norman stallion named Faust was a significant early influence on the breed, and contributed to the original shape of the breed.
