Peter Hedger
Peter Hedger ( – 4 December 2022) was a British horse trainer who trained horses which competed in both Flat racing and National Hunt racing. Hedger began a career as an apprentice jockey but was forced to give up riding after a serious fall in 1965. He subsequently worked as a horsebox driver before taking out a permit to train his own horses at his stable near Chichester in 1981. In 1989 he took out a full training licence, which allowed him to train horses for other people, and continued training until moving to France in 2006. He returned to Britain in 2009 and resumed training from a stable in Hampshire before his final retirement in 2020. His biggest training victory came in 1991 when Al Asoof won the National Spirit Hurdle and other major successes came in the John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes and Great Jubilee Handicap. National Hunt Racing
In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. A horse trailer or horse van (also called a horse float in Australia and New Zealand or horsebox in the British Isles) is used to transport horses. National Spirit Hurdle
The National Spirit Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Fontwell Park over a distance of about 2 miles and 3 furlongs (2 miles, 3 furlongs and 33 yards or ), and during its running there are ten hurdles to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year in late February or early March. The event is named after National Spirit, a dual winner of the Champion Hurdle in the 1940s. National Spirit won five times at Fontwell Park, including three successive victories in the Rank Challenge Cup. The National Spirit Hurdle was established in 1965, and the inaugural running was won by Salmon Spray. During its early years it was also won by Comedy of Errors. John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes
The John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at York over a distance of 1 mile 5 furlongs and 188 yards (2,787 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. The race was first run in 1985 as the ''Sun Page 3 Stakes'' at Lingfield Park. The following year it had Listed status and was renamed the ''Sun Page 3 Silver Cup''. It was moved to York in 1990 and was run as a handicap race between 1993 and 2015. In 2018 it was upgraded to Group 3 status and restricted to four-year-olds and up as part of the European Pattern Committee's commitment to improving the race programme for stayers in Europe. Leighton Aspell (born 12 June 1976) is a retired Irish jockey, whose wins include the Champion Four Year Old Hurdle riding United (horse), United, two runnings of the Welsh National, the 2014 Grand National riding Pineau de Re and the 2015 Grand National riding Many Clouds. Personal life Leighton Aspell was born 12 June 1976 in Dublin, Ireland. He grew up in Narraghmore, County Kildare. Aspell has a brother, Paddy, who is also a jockey, and was originally taught to ride by his father, Patrick. He was later apprenticed to Reg Hollinshead. Aspell has a fan club, making him "one of the few jockeys" to have such a thing.
