Perugia Ponte San Giovanni Railway Station
Perugia Ponte San Giovanni railway station () is a station in the Ponte San Giovanni district of the city of Perugia, Italy. It is located at the junction of the Terontola–Perugia–Assisi–Foligno, Perugia–Terni and Perugia–Sansepolcro lines. Its buildings and infrastructure is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. History The station was opened with the Foligno–Terontola railway in 1866. Its name was changed from ''Perugia Scalo Ponte San Giovanni'' to ''Perugia Ponte San Giovanni'' in 1927. Buildings and infrastructure The station building is on two levels but only the ground floor is accessible by passengers. Two smaller, single-storey buildings symmetrically branch off from the station building. The entrances to the station building are covered by undulating canopies on both sides of the building, which also act as a shelter for track 1. Ponte San Giovanni is a '' frazione'' of the city of Perugia, Italy. It has 13,296 inhabitants and is one of the largest and most populated neighbourhoods in the capital city of Umbria. Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy. A subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, itself owned by the Italian government, the company was established in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is the Italian railway infrastructure manager, subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), a state-owned holding company. Terni–Perugia–Sansepolcro railway is a railway line in Umbria, Italy. It was built by the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra (Central Umbrian Railway Company, FCU) The line, about in length, connects Terni in southern Umbria with Sansepolcro, Tuscany, with stops in Todi, Perugia, Umbertide and Città di Castello. It is operated by Busitalia Sita Nord, a subsidiary of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group. History The line was inaugurated on 12 July 1915. It was partially destroyed during World War II, and gradually reopened between October 1944 and May 1953. Passenger numbers peaked at 3,001,900 in 1975.
