Percy Township
Percy, Ontario was a former incorporated township and now a geographic township located in Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. It is currently part of the Municipality of Trent Hills. The Township was named in 1798 for Lady Elizabeth Seymour, the wife of Hugh Percy, the first Duke of Northumberland. She later became the Baroness of Percy. Adjoining Seymour Township was given the Baroness' maiden name. A settlement grew, and in 1872, the Village of Hastings was separated from Percy and incorporated as a separate municipality. The community of Warkworth is located in Percy and was the administrative centre for the municipality. Percy was originally part of the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham, then Northumberland after the United Counties were restructured in 1974. In 2001, Percy was amalgamated with Hastings, the Town of Campbellford and the Township of Seymour to form the Town of Campbellford / Seymour, Percy & Hastings. Hastings is a community within the municipality of Trent Hills, Northumberland County, in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway and the Trans Canada Trail in what is considered to be Ontario's "cottage country". It can be reached from Highway 401 by exiting at exit 474 at Cobourg and going north on County Road 45. It can be reached from Highway 7 at the Norwood exit going south (also on County Road 45). Hastings had a population of 1,208 at the 2001 Census. It is known as "The Hub of the Trent" as Hastings is directly on the Trent River and serves as a major centre for tourists, boaters, and fishermen. Campbellford, Ontario
Campbellford is an unincorporated place and former town in Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada, in the township municipality of Trent Hills. It lies approximately midway between Toronto and Ottawa. It is situated on both the Trent-Severn Waterway and the Trans Canada Trail. It can be reached from Highway 401 by exiting at Brighton (exit 509) and going north on County Road 30. It can also be reached from Highway 7 at the Havelock exit going south (also on County Road 30). Campbellford is surrounded by prime agricultural land which is home to many farms. Warkworth is a community in the municipality of Trent Hills, Northumberland in Central Ontario, Canada. Originally known as Percy Mills (1851 Census), the village of Warkworth was incorporated in 1857, and became part of Trent Hills when the latter was formed in 2001. Hugh Percy, 1st Duke of Northumberland, (c. 17146 June 1786), was an English peer, landowner, and art patron. Origins He was born Hugh Smithson, the son of Lansdale Smithson (b. 1682) of Langdale and Philadelphia Revely. He was a grandson of Sir Hugh Smithson, 3rd Baronet, from whom he inherited the Smithson Baronetcy in 1733. Elizabeth Percy, Duchess of Northumberland ( née ''Seymour''; 26 November 1716 – 5 December 1776), also ''suo jure'' 2nd Baroness Percy, was a British peer. Life Percy was the only daughter of Algernon Seymour, 7th Duke of Somerset, and his wife, Frances, daughter of Henry Thynne. On 16 July 1740, she married Sir Hugh Smithson, Bt, and they had two sons, Hugh (1742–1817) and Algernon (1750–1830). On her father's death in 1750, she inherited his barony of Percy and her husband acquired from her father his earldom of Northumberland by special remainder and changed his family name from Smithson to Percy that year. Sir Hugh's illegitimate son James Smithson, otherwise Jacques Louis Macie, born in about 1764 to one of Elizabeth's cousins, bequeathed the fortune which established the Smithsonian Institution.
