The term township, in Canada, is generally the district or area associated with a town. The specific use of the term to describe political subdivisions has varied by country, usually to describe a local rural or semirural government within the country itself. In Eastern Canada, a township is one form of the subdivision of a county. In Quebec, the term is ''canton'' in French. Jocelyn, Ontario
Jocelyn is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located on St. Joseph Island in the Algoma District. The current reeve of the township is Mark Henderson. Jocelyn is home to Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site. The primary community in the township is Kentvale, which is located around Kentvale Merchants Limited, the largest general store on St. Joseph Island. Kentvale Merchants Limited is actually located in the Township of St. Joseph and previously operated under the name Kentvale General Merchants. It was opened in 1888 by Emily M. Kent and Frederick B. Kent. A community outdoor hockey rink on the property provided recreation for this farming community for many years. It was operated by the Kent family and volunteers from the community. The original operation consisted of a grist and saw mill operated by Frederick and a store that Emily ran. White River, Ontario
White River is a township located in Northern Ontario, Canada, along Highway 17 of the Trans-Canada Highway. It was originally a rail town on the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885. Its main employers are Albert Bazzoni Ltd., A&W Restaurant, Tri Timber, NCCP, CP Rail, Home Hardware, and Primary Power. History In the early 1880s, White River started as a workcamp along the Canadian Pacific Railway, then under construction, but grew into a town when this site was selected by William Van Horne as the railway's divisional point. By 1886, it had a station house, fine hotels and an ice house. A stockyard to feed and water the livestock that regularly traveled through was also added. Its population grew from 10 families in 1886 to 42 families in 1906. In 1961, Highway 17 reached White River, making it accessible by car. Wawa is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario in the Algoma District. Formerly known as the Township of Michipicoten, named after a nearby river of that name, the township was officially renamed in 2007 for its largest and best-known community of Wawa, located on the western shores of Wawa Lake. Tarbutt, Ontario
Tarbutt (formerly known as Tarbutt and Tarbutt Additional) is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located within the Algoma District. The township is about east of Sault Ste. Marie. Its population centres are Port Findlay and MacLennan. It is the only municipality along the North Channel of Lake Huron which includes no residential communities located directly along Highway 17; MacLennan is located north of the highway at the intersection of MacLennan Road and Government Road, while Port Findlay is located at the south end of MacLennan Road along the waterfront. Prince is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located within the Algoma District northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. Although the township is not part of the city of Sault Ste. Marie, some municipal services are contracted to the city. The only named community within the township is Gros Cap. Most mail and telephone service in the township is part of Sault Ste. Marie's sortation area and telephone exchange. Naturally spring fed, Price Lake is a long-standing settlement for permanent residents and vacationers. Plummer Additional is a township and single tier municipality located in Algoma District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. The township had a population of 660 in the Canada 2016 Census. Communities The township includes the communities of Bruce Station, Cloudslee, Plummer, Rock Lake and Rydal Bank. North Shore, Ontario
The North Shore is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the Algoma District. The township had a population of 497 in the Canada 2016 Census. It is along the north shore of the North Channel of Lake Huron (hence its name), with its main communities all along Highway 17.
