Percy Heggaton
Percival Thomas (Percy) Heggaton (4 July 1869 – 14 December 1948) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly multi-member seat of Alexandra from 1906 to 1915, when he voluntarily retired when the electorate's allocation went from four members to three. He stood again successfully in 1923, and held the seat until 1938 for the Australasian National League, Liberal Union, Liberal Federation and Liberal and Country League. He was for some time a member of the Public Works Committee. History Mr. Heggaton was born at Middleton on 4 June 1869, the third son of William Heggaton (c. 1826 – 1 August 1916). He was educated at the local public school, then Whinham College, before dairy farming at Vaudon Downs on Hindmarsh Island. In 1900 he established a cheese and butter factory on the island. Electoral District Of Alexandra
Alexandra was an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia from 1902 to 1992, and was formed when the electoral districts of Encounter Bay, Mount Barker and Noarlunga were amalgamated. Hindmarsh Island
Hindmarsh Island (Ngarrindjeri: Kumerangk) is an inland river island located in the lower Murray River near the town of Goolwa, South Australia, Goolwa, South Australia. The island is a tourist destination, which has increased in popularity since the opening of the Hindmarsh Island bridge in 2001. The County of Jervois is a cadastral unit in the Australian state of South Australia that covers land on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula. It was proclaimed on 24 January 1878 and named after William Jervois, the Governor of South Australia from October 1877 to January 1883. Description The county covers the part of the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula overlooking the Spencer Gulf from Murninnie Beach in the north and Cape Hardy in the south, and which extends inland from the coastline for a distance of about in the north, and about in the south. Murrumburrah
Murrumburrah is a township in New South Wales, Australia, part of a twin town with Harden. The town is in Hilltops Council local government area in the South West Slopes area of NSW. It is on the Burley Griffin Way, the major link from the Riverina to the Hume Highway near Yass, and ultimately Sydney, Canberra and the coast. The name probably comes from Wiradhuri ''murrimboola'', which can reasonably be translated to "two waterholes". History Before European settlement the Harden area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri people. Hume and Hovell passed nearby in 1824. In the late 1820s, the 'Murrumburra' was established. Its superintendent, James Kennedy, established an inn on the townsite in the late 1840s. Gold was found in the area in the 1850s. In 1858, it was gazetted as the name Murrimboola, which was a Wiradjuri word meaning ''two water holes''. North Adelaide Grammar School, later Whinham College was a private school operated in North Adelaide, South Australia by John Whinham (3 August 1803 – 13 March 1886) and his family. History John Whinham The founder of the school was born at Sharperton, Northumberland, and when very young displayed a thirst for knowledge and an aptitude for mathematics. He was tutored by a Roman Catholic clergyman, and at age 19 while acting as an assistant teacher qualified for entry to the University of Dublin, but family illnesses kept him in England, and in 1823 he took to teaching, and opened a school in Ovingham, near Newcastle upon Tyne. He was very successful there, and he received offers from Newcastle to move there, but chose to remain in Ovingham, where he married and became the father of six daughters and two sons. Middleton, South Australia
Middleton is a town in South Australia on the eastern end of the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It lies between the towns of Port Elliot and Goolwa. Middleton is a holiday and tourist destination with a popular surf beach. Some southern right whales calve and mate in the waters off Middleton's beaches and can be viewed from Middleton Point or Bashams Beach during the whale watching season (June or July to October).
