Murrumburrah
Murrumburrah is a township in New South Wales, Australia, part of a twin town with Harden. The town is in Hilltops Council local government area in the South West Slopes area of NSW. It is on the Burley Griffin Way, the major link from the Riverina to the Hume Highway near Yass, and ultimately Sydney, Canberra and the coast. The name probably comes from Wiradhuri ''murrimboola'', which can reasonably be translated to "two waterholes". History Before European settlement the Harden area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri people. Hume and Hovell passed nearby in 1824. In the late 1820s, the 'Murrumburra' was established. Its superintendent, James Kennedy, established an inn on the townsite in the late 1840s. Gold was found in the area in the 1850s. In 1858, it was gazetted as the name Murrimboola, which was a Wiradjuri word meaning ''two water holes''. Harden, New South Wales
Harden–Murrumburrah is a township and community in the Hilltops Region and is located in the South West Slopes of New South Wales in Australia. Harden is adjacent to both the Canberra region of the Australian Capital Territory and the Riverina Region in the southwest area of NSW. The town is a twin town between Harden and Murrumburrah (which is noted as one of the earliest settlements in the southwest of New South Wales). The town is traversed by the Burley Griffin Way, the major link from and between the Riverina and the Hume Highway near Yass, and ultimately Sydney, Canberra and the coast. Cunningham Creek runs along the edge of the town. The Olympic Highway traverses the western end of the shire and is the major link through the central west to the Blue Mountains and from there to the Sydney region. Demondrille Railway Station
The Demondrille railway station (pron. de MON drill) is a heritage-listed disused railway station on the Main South railway line in Murrumburrah, Hilltops Council, New South Wales, Australia. The station is located at the junction of the branch line to Cowra and Blayney with the Main South line. It consisted of a pair of island platforms, one on the mainline and one on the branchline, with a pair of signal boxes controlling the junction, which was formerly a triangle junction. The station opened in 1885 and closed in 1974. The platforms have been removed but the mainlines have not been straightened. Harden Railway Station
Harden railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Main South line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the town of Harden. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History Harden station opened on 12 March 1877 as Murrumburrah when the Main South line was extended from Binalong. It served as the terminus until the line was extended to Cootamundra on 1 November 1877. It was renamed North Murrumburrah on 5 September 1878 and finally Harden on 1 September 1880. The Cricket Captains' Walk is a collection of specially commissioned bronze busts of Test captains of the Australian men’s national cricket team, arrayed on pedestals on the outside of a rectangular path set in a large public park in Cootamundra, New South Wales. The all-weather path, which starts and ends at Wallendoon Street is wheelchair friendly, and approximately 150 metres around. Cootamundra
Cootamundra, nicknamed Coota, is a town in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia and within the Riverina. It is within the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council. At the 2016 Census, Cootamundra had a population of 6,782. It is located on the Olympic Highway at the point where it crosses the Muttama Creek, between Junee and Cowra. Its railway station is on the Main Southern line, part of the Melbourne-to-Sydney line. Cootamundra is the birthplace of Sir Donald Bradman , an Australian cricketer universally regarded as the greatest batsman of all time. 1st Australian (Volunteer) Horse
The 1st Australian Horse was a mounted infantry regiment of the Colony of New South Wales that was formed in 1897. The 1st Australian Horse wore distinctive myrtle green uniforms with black embroidery. Hilltops Council
Hilltops Council is a local government area in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed on 12 May 2016 from the merger of Boorowa Council, Harden Shire and Young Shire. The local government area covers much the same area as the Hilltops wine region. The Mayor of Hilltops Council is Margaret Roles, an independent politician, who was elected unopposed after the inaugural election held on 4 December 2021. Burley Griffin Way
Burley Griffin Way is a New South Wales state route, is located in south eastern Australia. Named after the American architect Walter Burley Griffin, designer of the cities of Canberra and Griffith, the road links these two cities via Yass and Barton Highway. Route Burley Griffin Way commences at the intersection of Irrigation Way at Yoogali, in the eastern suburbs of Griffith, and heads in an easterly direction, passing through the regional towns of Yenda and Barellan, before meeting Newell Highway at Ardlethan. Main Southern Railway Line, New South Wales
The Main Southern Railway is a major railway in New South Wales, Australia. It runs from Sydney to Albury, near the Victorian border. The line passes through the Southern Highlands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Riverina regions. Description of route The Main Southern Railway commences as an electrified pair of tracks in the Sydney metropolitan area. Since 1924, the line branches from the Main Suburban railway line at Lidcombe and runs via Regents Park to Cabramatta, where it rejoins the original route from Granville. Cootamundra is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. Cootamundra is a regional electorate encompassing the local government areas of Bland Shire, Narrandera Shire, Coolamon Shire, Temora Shire, Junee Shire, Weddin Shire, Cowra Shire, part of Hilltops Council and Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council.
