Per Berthelsen
Per Berthelsen (born 1950 in Qeqertarsuaq) is a Greenlandic politician. He is the founder and former party leader of the Demokraatit (Democratic) Party, and works as a teacher in Nuuk. He was first elected to the municipal council in Nuuk Municipality in 1993, and was first elected to the national parliament in 1993. He was one of the founding members of the pioneering Greenlandic rock band Sume. He has worked in a variety of roles, and has been leader of Katuaq since 1998. When Nuuk Municipality elected a new mayor in 2007, following the death of Agnethe Davidsen, Berthelsen was the Democrats' candidate, but lost out to Nikolaj Heinrich by just three votes. His father, Rasmus Berthelsen, was also a politician, and was mayor of Nuuk. Qeqertarsuaq
Qeqertarsuaq () is a port and town in Qeqertalik municipality, located on the south coast of Disko Island on the west coast of Greenland. Founded in 1773, the town is now home to a campus of the University of Copenhagen known as Arctic Station. ''Qeqertarsuaq'' is the Kalaallisut name for Disko Island and is also now used for several other islands on Greenland, including those formerly known as Upernavik and Herbert Island. Qeqertarsuaq means ‘the big island’ in Kalaallisut ( da, den store ø). In 2020, the town had 839 inhabitants. The remainder of the population of the island (less than 50 people) lives in the Kangerluk settlement, a few hours by boat to the northwest. Demokraatit
The Democrats ( kl, Demokraatit ; da, Demokraterne) is a liberal, unionist political party in Greenland. The party is skeptical of Greenlandic independence and even further self-governance. It has taken over this position from the Atassut party, which has developed towards favouring more autonomy. Two of the major priorities in its programme are improving educational standards and the housing situation. History Established in 2002, the party won five seats in the elections that year. It increased its seat total to seven in the 2005 elections, but was excluded from power by a so-called "Northern Lights Coalition" of Siumut, Inuit Ataqatigiit and Atassut. Nuuk
Nuuk (; da, Nuuk, formerly ) is the capital and largest city of Greenland, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2021, it had a population of 18,800. The city was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede when he relocated from the earlier Hope Colony () where he arrived in 1721. Nuuk Municipality
Nuuk Municipality was one of the municipalities of Greenland until 31 December 2008. On 1 January 2009, it was merged with four other former municipalities into the new Sermersooq municipality. The central town was Nuuk. Katuaq
Katuaq ( da, Grønlands Kulturhus) is a cultural centre in Nuuk, Greenland. It is used for concerts, exhibitions, conferences, and as a cinema. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, it was constructed as a joint project of the Greenland Home Rule Government, the Nuuk Municipal Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers and was inaugurated on 15 February 1997. Building Katuaq is an L-shaped building with an undulating, backward-leaning screen facing onto Nuuk's central urban space. It is raised above the ground and clad in golden larch wood on both the inside and outside. The screen is inspired by the northern lights. This second skin also creates a contrast to the building proper. Between the perimeter screen and the core building lies the large foyer with three white freestanding elements in the shape of a triangle, square and circle. Agnethe Davidsen
Agnethe Davidsen (29 August 1947 Nuuk – 25 November 2007, Nuuk) was a judge who was the first female government minister in Greenland and only the second female mayor of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, where she was mayor for more than 14 years until she died suddenly at the age of 60. Early years Agnethe was born in 1947 to mother Agathe Lund and father Villy Wael (1928-98), but she was raised by her grandmother. At 16, she met her future husband, the blacksmith Aqqaluartaaq Davidsen, whom she married in 1966, and they had two children, Søren (1965) and Heidi (1967). In 1969, seeking more education, she took the children to Ikast, Denmark and graduated in 1970 with a "trade degree in commerce and office." After returning to Greenland, she began working in the national court system in Nuuk. Nikolaj Heinrich (born 1938) is a Greenlandic fisherman and politician, who founded the right wing Polar Party and represented it in parliament 1987–1995, but later switched to Siumut. Rasmus Berthelsen (politician)
Rasmus Storm Josva Berthel Berthelsen (1827–1901) was a Greenlandic teacher, poet, and artist. He also served as an early editor for ''Atuagagdliutit/Grønlandsposten, Atuagagdliutit''. He is considered important to their literary history and wrote the Greenland Christmas carol ''Guterput'' or ''Our God''. His woodcut ''Starving Greenlanders'' is seen as an early example of social commentary in Greenland art. He is perhaps best known for the hymn-writing and also poetry being seen as perhaps the first Greenlandic author, at least of the post-Viking age.
