Peoria, Oregon
Peoria is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It is on the right bank of the Willamette River at river mile 141 between Eugene and Corvallis. Lacking stores and services, it is a cluster of houses plus a county park along Peoria Road, about south of Oregon Route 34 and north of Harrisburg. As of the 2010 census, the population was 94. Demographics History Peoria, named for Peoria, Illinois, was first settled in 1851 by H. A. McCartney. By 1875, the community was prosperous enough to have four grain warehouses and a school with 60 pupils. However, after the Oregon and California Railroad established a line through Shedd and Halsey further east, business in Peoria declined. A post office in this vicinity opened in 1855 under the name "Burlington". The name was changed to "Peoria" in 1857, and the office closed in 1900. A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing cities, towns, and villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. CDPs are populated areas that generally include one officially designated but currently unincorporated community, for which the CDP is named, plus surrounding inhabited countryside of varying dimensions and, occasionally, other, smaller unincorporated communities as well. Burlington, Linn County, Oregon
Burlington is an unincorporated historic community Linn County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It was located about a mile downriver from Peoria. History The town began with a ferry across the Willamette River run by John Smith, and a store owned by John Donald. James Freeman platted the townsite in 1853, at which time it had two houses, two stores, a blacksmith shop, and the ferry. The river silted up and made the boat landings inaccessible so the town's population soon dwindled. Some of the buildings were moved to Peoria. Burlington post office was established in 1855 and ran until 1857 when it was renamed Peoria and likely moved to the other town. Burlington was located on the Donation Land Claim of James Martin who came to Oregon from Little York, Illinois. A family tradition among Martin's descendants holds that Burlington was named after Burlington, Iowa, the nearest market town to Little York. Today Burlington, Oregon is considered a ghost town. Halsey is a city in Linn County, Oregon, Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 904 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. History The city was founded in 1872, and legally incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 20, 1876. The city takes its name from William L. Halsey, who was at the time vice-president of Oregon & California Railroad. On July 31, 1903 most of the city's downtown core burned to the ground, after a fire started at the J. L. Bishur Creamery. The city's iconic grain elevator was built in 1955 and stood at a height of 180 feet. It was partially demolished in December 2012 over concerns of structural integrity. Shedd, Oregon
Shedd is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Linn County, Oregon, United States, on Oregon Route 99E. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 204. History In 1858, a community and gristmill was established about a mile and a half east of the present town of Shedd and called "Boston", probably because one of the founders came from Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was platted in 1861 with a New England-style town square. The town became a stagecoach stop, and "Boston Mills" post office was established in 1869. Efforts to get the Oregon and California Railroad, which was being built south from Albany, to come through Boston Mills were unsuccessful. The railroad was instead built through the nearby land donated by Civil War veteran Captain Frank Shedd, and "Shedd's Station" was created in 1871. The post office was moved soon after. Oregon And California Railroad
The Oregon and California Railroad was formed from the Oregon Central Railroad when it was the first to operate a stretch south of Portland in 1869. This qualified the railroad for land grants in California, whereupon the name of the railroad soon changed to Oregon & California Rail Road Company. In 1887, the line was completed over Siskiyou Summit, and the Southern Pacific Railroad assumed control of the railroad, although it was not officially sold to Southern Pacific until January 3, 1927. This route was eventually spun off from the Southern Pacific as the Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad.
