Penpergwm Railway Station
Penpergwm railway station was a former station which served the Monmouthshire, Wales, village of Penpergwm, although the community adjacent to the station was very small and it could equally be said to have served the larger village of Llangattock Nigh Usk (Llangatwg Dyffryn Wysg in Welsh) which lay less than half a mile away to the east. It was located on the Welsh Marches Line between Pontypool (formerly Pontypool Road) and Abergavenny. The former station house is now a private residence. The station closed in 1958. The double line remains in use and carries a regular service of trains between Cardiff, Newport and Hereford. Accidents The station appears to have been the scene of a surprising number of accidents recorded in local newspapers: *4 April 1865. Penpergwm
Penpergwm is a village in south Wales, situated along the A40 road, south-east of Abergavenny and west of Monmouth. The site of Castell Arnallt lies on a mound in the water meadows between the village and the River Usk. The village used to have to a railway station on the Welsh Marches Line, but it closed in 1958. Newport, Abergavenny And Hereford Railway
The Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway was a railway company formed to connect the places in its name. When it sought Parliamentary authorisation, it was denied the southern section, and obliged to use the Monmouthshire Railway between Pontypool and Newport. It opened on 6 December 1853, and was part of an important chain of lines between south-east Wales and Birkenhead; mineral traffic in both directions was dominant. The London and North Western Railway hoped to exploit the line to form a network in South Wales, but that aspiration was not fully realised, and in 1860 the NA&HR merged with other railways to form the West Midland Railway, which soon amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1863. Great Western Railway
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841. Pontypool ( cy, Pont-y-pŵl ) is a town and the administrative centre of the county borough of Torfaen, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire in South Wales. It has a population of 28,970.
