Penn-Jersey Spirit
Penn-Jersey Spirit played in the American Professional Soccer League in 1990 and 1991. The team's home stadium was Lions Stadium in Ewing, New Jersey, on the campus of Trenton State College (today known as the College of New Jersey). The team also played a small number of home games at La Salle University. The team was coached by Dave MacWilliams and assisted by former local professional player Tom O'Dea. Mike Romeo was the team's goalkeeper coach. Notable players included Cris Vaccaro and Dan Donigan as well as a pair of current NCAA Division I coaches, Dave Masur of St. John's University and George Gelnovatch of University of Virginia. The team also had Matt Knowles, who was the first draft pick of the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in 1996. American Professional Soccer League
The American Professional Soccer League (APSL) was a professional men's soccer league with teams from the United States and later Canada. It was formed in 1990 by the merger of the third American Soccer League with the Western Soccer League. It was the first outdoor soccer league to feature teams from throughout the United States since the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984. The league was sanctioned as Division II in the United States soccer league system but was the country's ''de facto'' top professional soccer league until 1995. In 1993, the APSL applied for the vacant Division I role but lost out to Major League Soccer who would begin play in 1996. For its final two seasons in 1995 and 1996, the APSL changed its name to the A-League. It was subsequently absorbed by the emerging USISL organization with six of seven clubs joining the new USISL A-League in 1997. Dale Caya is a retired American soccer goalkeeper who was the 1990 American Professional Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Year. Caya attended Temple University, playing on the men's soccer team from 1982 to 1985. In 1988, he played for the amateur Philadelphia Inter. In July 1989, Caya signed with the Penn-Jersey Football Club. Overview of the 1990 American Professional Soccer League season. Although the Western Soccer League and the American Soccer League merged to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990, the two leagues remained essentially independent leagues, linked by name alone. During this season, they ran separate regular season schedules with two different points systems. They each had their own playoff formats, had separate league MVPs and had their own All-League teams. The first game between the two leagues came in September when the Maryland Bays of the American Soccer League defeated the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks of the Western Soccer League for the American Professional Soccer League championship. Brian Ainscough
Brian Ainscough is a soccer coach, who last coached the men's soccer team at Northeastern University from 2005 to 2014. He compiled a 79-80-33 overall record, including a 27-16-12 mark in conference play. He transformed the Huskies soccer program into one of the best in the CAA, posting four straight top 5 finishes in conference play. His best success came in 2009, when the team went 10–8–1, including an 8–3–1 mark in conference play. He has led the team to back-to-back finals appearances in the CAA tournament, narrowly missing the NCAA tournament both years. He was previously the head men's soccer coach at Providence College, where he coached the Friars for four years. He turned around the Friars program, which was then considered one of the worst in the Big East, and guided them to a 9–9–1 record his final year.
