American Professional Soccer League
The American Professional Soccer League (APSL) was a professional men's soccer league with teams from the United States and later Canada. It was formed in 1990 by the merger of the third American Soccer League with the Western Soccer League. It was the first outdoor soccer league to feature teams from throughout the United States since the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984. The league was sanctioned as Division II in the United States soccer league system but was the country's ''de facto'' top professional soccer league until 1995. In 1993, the APSL applied for the vacant Division I role but lost out to Major League Soccer who would begin play in 1996. For its final two seasons in 1995 and 1996, the APSL changed its name to the A-League. It was subsequently absorbed by the emerging USISL organization with six of seven clubs joining the new USISL A-League in 1997. Kevin Sloan
Kevin Sloan is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the American Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. He has also coached professionally and is the former head coach of the Neumann College men's soccer team. Kevin took on a bigger role in 2015, when he resigned from Neumann to take on a new challenge as a scout for Manchester City Player Youth Sloan graduated from Oakland Mills High School. He then attended Catawba College where he was a 1986 Second Team and a 1985 and 1987 First Team NAIA All American soccer player. Scott Cannon (born July 22, 1968 in Evansville, Indiana) is an American former soccer player who played three seasons in Major League Soccer, two in the American Professional Soccer League, three in the National Professional Soccer League and at least four in the USISL and USL. He was the 1999 USL Defender of the Year and a two time USL All Star. High school and college Cannon grew up in Evansville, Indiana, attending Reitz Memorial High School where he won 3 State Championships and was a 1985 and 1986 NSCAA High School All-American soccer player. John Garvey (soccer)
John Garvey (born March 26, 1969 in Guilford, Connecticut) is a retired American soccer player. Career College Garvey played college soccer at the University of Maryland from 1987 to 1990. Professional In 1991, following his graduation from Maryland, Garvey had a trial with Coventry City but was not offered a contract. He returned to the United States and signed with the Miami Freedom of the American Professional Soccer League. After eight games, he was traded to the Albany Capitals where he played in the 1991 APSL championship game. Scott Cook is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the American Professional Soccer League, National Professional Soccer League and USISL. Cook graduated Charles W. Woodward High School from where he was part of the school's 1982 Maryland state championship high school soccer team. In 1983, he attended the University of Connecticut, playing on the men's soccer team for one season before failing out of school. In 1985, Cook entered the University of South Carolina. He would play on the Gamecocks’ soccer team from 1985 to 1987. In 1988, he turned professional with the Maryland Bays of the American Soccer League. Brian Haynes (born 7 May 1962 in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago) is a Trinidadian football coach and former player who earned twenty-one caps with the Trinidad and Tobago national team. Phillinoisip "Phillip" Gyau (born February 7, 1966) is a former U.S. soccer forward who is the current head coach of the Howard Bison men's soccer program. He spent his outdoor career in the American Soccer League and the American Professional Soccer League, his indoor career with the Washington Warthogs and Baltimore Blast, and spent nine years with the U.S. National Beach Soccer team.
