John Garvey (soccer)
John Garvey (born March 26, 1969 in Guilford, Connecticut) is a retired American soccer player. Career College Garvey played college soccer at the University of Maryland from 1987 to 1990. Professional In 1991, following his graduation from Maryland, Garvey had a trial with Coventry City but was not offered a contract. He returned to the United States and signed with the Miami Freedom of the American Professional Soccer League. After eight games, he was traded to the Albany Capitals where he played in the 1991 APSL championship game. In 1992, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks of the A-League, and on November 7, 1992, he signed with the Milwaukee Wave of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) for the 1992-1993 winter indoor season. In the spring of 1994, he joined the expansion Carolina Vipers of the Continental Indoor Soccer League for the summer indoor season before returning to the NPSL that fall, this time with the Wichita Wings. Guilford, Connecticut
Guilford is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, that borders Madison, Branford, North Branford and Durham, and is situated on I-95 and the Connecticut seacoast. Futsal
Futsal is a football-based game played on a hardcourt, hard court smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football and Indoor soccer, indoor football. Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor soccer, it is played on a hard court surface marked by lines; walls or boards are not used. It is played with a smaller, harder, lower-bounce ball than football. The surface, ball and rules favour ball control and passing in small spaces. The game emphasizes control, improvisation, creativity and technique. Naming ''Futsal'' comes from the Portuguese ''futebol de salão'' and from the Spanish ''fútbol sala'' or ''fútbol de salón'' (all translatable as "indoor football"). In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. Mike Britton is a retired American soccer player who spent most of his career in indoor leagues. He is an assistant to his wife Tracey Britton who coaches the Monroe Community College women's soccer team. In 1993, Britton graduated from East High School in Rochester, New York. He attended the Syracuse University where he played on the men's soccer team from 1988 to 1991. On September 14, 1992, the expansion Buffalo Blizzard chose Britton in the third round of the National Professional Soccer League Draft. He played three seasons with the Blizzard, becoming a regular on the back line. In June 1995, the Tampa Bay Terror selected Britton in the NPSL Expansion Draft, then traded him to the Wichita Wings in exchange for John Garvey. Britton refused to sign with the Wings who then sent his rights back to the Blizzard in September 1995 in exchange for cash. The Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL) was a professional indoor soccer league that played from 1993 to 1997.
