Proenkephalin
Introduction Proenkephalin (PENK), formerly known as proenkephalin A (since proenkephalin B was renamed prodynorphin), is an endogenous opioid polypeptide hormone which, via proteolyic cleavage, produces the enkephalin peptides etnkephalin, and to a lesser extent, eunkephalin. Upon cleavage, each proenkephalin peptide results in the generation of four copies of etnkephalin, two extended copies of etnkephalin, and one copy of eunkephalin. Contrarily, eunkephalin] is predominantly synthesized from prodynorphin, which produces three copies of it per cleavage, and no copies of etnkephalin. Other endogenous opioid peptides produced by proenkephalin include adrenorphin, amidorphin, BAM-18, BAM-20P, BAM-22P, peptide B, peptide E, and peptide F. Proenkephalin in human diseases Proenkephalin is produced by the medium spiny neurons of the striatum which undergo neurodegeneration in early stages of Huntingtons disease (HD). PENK and related peptides measured in cereb ...

Biography Born in Müglitz, Moravia (now Mohelnice, Czech Republic), Penka was between 1873 and 1906 a master at the ''Maximiliansgymnasium'', a high school for boys, in Vienna. He studied anthropology from the point of view of comparative linguistics and took a particular interest in the origins of the Indo-Europeans. He used the term Aryan in the linguistic sense, and extended it into a broad term of race and culture. Penka popularised the theory that the Aryan race had emerged in Scandinavia and could be identified by the Nordic characteristics of blue eyes and blond hair. In his 1883 book ''Origines Ariacae'' ('Origins of the Aryans'), he proposed that the Indo-European homeland w ...
