Penallt Halt was a request stop on the former Wye Valley Railway. It was opened on 1 August 1931 and closed in 1959. Penallt
Penallt (also spelt Penalt) is a village in Monmouthshire, Wales, set high on a hill south of Monmouth. In the centre of the village, by the village green, is the 17th-century village pub, the Bush Inn. Description Nearby, the ''Penallt Old Church Wood'' is a nature reserve managed by the Gwent Wildlife Trust. This deciduous woodland forms a habitat for several bird species, including pied flycatchers, nuthatches, tree pipits, treecreeperss and sparrowhawks. Plant species include wild daffodils and moschatel. Penallt Old Church is about a mile north of the village. Great Western Railway
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841. Wye Valley Railway
The Wye Valley Railway was a standard gauge railway that ran for nearly along the Lower Wye Valley between the towns of Chepstow and Monmouth, crossing several times between Wales and England. Opened on 1 November 1876, it was leased to, and worked by, the Great Western Railway (GWR), before being fully absorbed by the GWR in 1905. The line was built with the hope of becoming part of a through trunk route between Bristol and the industrial Midlands, a development which never took place. Although tourism provided some new passenger business in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, the line's income was always weak. After nationalisation, British Railways reviewed its viability and withdrew the passenger service on 5 January 1959. Penallt Viaduct
Penallt Viaduct is a viaduct that formerly carried the Wye Valley Railway over the River Wye, which at this location forms the border between England (Gloucestershire) and Wales (Monmouthshire). The Wye Valley Railway opened on 1 November 1876. The viaduct is a single-track curved structure of five girder spans supported on four pairs of cast iron columns, located between and stations. Passenger services ceased on the railway in 1959 and it closed to freight in January 1964. The viaduct is still open to carry a public footpath, attached to the upstream girders of the viaduct, over the Wye between the villages of Redbrook and Penallt. Redbrook
Redbrook is a village in Gloucestershire, England, adjoining the border with Monmouthshire, Wales. It is located on the River Wye and is within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. History Both Upper and Lower Redbrook were mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as lying within the hundred of Bromsash and they were both listed under Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. At that time neither place was recorded as having any population. Redbrook was historically an important industrial centre with many industrial sites including mills, an ironworks, tinplate works and copper works. The oldest site is the King's Mill, which was a corn mill first recorded in 1434 and which remained in use until 1925. The Redbrook Copper Works used ore brought from Cornwall via Chepstow and worked until 1740 when it closed down and the buildings were leased for the manufacturer of tinplate. Redbrook on Wye railway station was a station serving the village of Redbrook on the now disused Wye Valley Railway. It was opened on 1 November 1876 with the rest of the line and remained open for 83 years, it closed in 1959.
