Trikala ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Τρικάλων) is one of the regional units of Greece, forming the northwestern part of the modern regions of Greece, region of Thessaly. Its capital is the town of Trikala. The regional unit includes the town of Kalampaka and the Meteora monastery complex. Geography Trikala borders the regional units of Karditsa (regional unit), Karditsa to the south, Arta (regional unit), Arta to the southwest, Ioannina (regional unit), Ioannina to the west, Grevena (regional unit), Grevena to the north and Larissa (regional unit), Larissa to the east. Farkadona ( el, Φαρκαδόνα, ; before 1955: Τσιότι, , ) is a municipality in the southeastern Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece. In 2011 its population was 2,652 for the town and 13,396 for the municipality. It is located about halfway between the cities Larissa to the east, and Trikala to the west, at about 30 km from both. It is situated in the Thessalian Plain, near the river Pineios. Farkadona is on the Greek National Road 6 (Larissa - Trikala - Ioannina - Igoumenitsa). Pelinna (Πέλιννα) or Pelinnaeum ( gr, Πελινναῖον) Arrian, ''Anabasis'', 1.7. was an ancient Greek polis (city-state) of Ancient Thessaly, in the district Histiaeotis, a little above the left bank of the Peneius. The city had a celebrated temple of Zeus Pelinnaeus. Pelinna was situated between Tricca and Pharcadon, near modern Palaiogardiki ( Trikala regional unit). The city gained particular prominence in the fourth century BCE through its alliance with Philip II of Macedon. Among other archaeological evidence of the religious significance of Pelinna are two Orphic gold tablets (''lamellae'') found in 1985 on the site of Petroporos, dating to the late fourth century BCE. It seems to have been a place of some importance even in the time of Pindar. Alexander the Great passed through the town in his rapid march from Illyria to Boeotia.
