Pelham is an unincorporated community in northwestern Caswell County, North Carolina, United States at the North Carolina/Virginia border. It is often considered a suburb of nearby Danville, Virginia. Pelham is located along Pelham Loop Road near the eastern terminus of NC 700 at US 29 (future Interstate 785). It was named for Confederate Col. John Pelham, known as "the Gallant Pelham" for his extraordinary bravery, whose parents, Dr. Atkinson and Martha Mumford McGehee Pelham, resided in neighboring Person County before moving to Alabama. NC 700
North Carolina Highway 700 (NC 700) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The highway runs east–west from Eden to U.S. Route 29 (US 29) in Pelham. Route description NC 700 is a rural two-lane highway, starting in Eden, where it starts along a concurrency with US 311 and NC 770. The western terminus is at an interchange where in addition to US 311 and NC 770 passing through, NC 14 and NC 87 pass north and south. The three roads run together for over before NC 700 heads south along Fieldcrest Street. It goes southeast out of the Eden city limits then northeast through a mix of forest and farmland. Casville is an unincorporated community in Caswell County, North Carolina, United States, located at the crossroads of U.S. Route 158 and Ashland Rd/Park Springs Rd. Travelers along US 158 notice a drastic change in the speed limit from 55 mph (88.5 km/h) to 35 mph (56.3 km/h) as they approach the community's only caution traffic signal; the speed limit returns to after leaving the crossroads area. Reidsville, North Carolina
Reidsville is a city in Rockingham County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. At the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 14,580. Reidsville is included in the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area of the Piedmont Triad. Reidsville was established in the early 19th century as an outpost and stop on the stage line that ran between Salisbury, North Carolina, and Danville, Virginia, and was originally known as Wright's Crossroads. Purley, North Carolina
The Caswell County, North Carolina, United States, unincorporated community of Purley, along with the communities of Blanche and Providence, makes up Dan River Township. On a farm in this area, a process for curing brightleaf tobacco was discovered by a slave in 1839 and improved in the 1850s. Tradition relates that the name "Purley" came from the Samuel Satterwhite Harrison House that sat on a hill and was painted a "pearly white" when such a paint scheme was a novelty. This resulted in much comment and the area eventually was named "Purley." Another community landmark is the Purley Store,c operated by the Pleasant family for over fifty years. Yanceyville, North Carolina
Yanceyville is a town in and the county seat of Caswell County, North Carolina, United States. Located in the Piedmont Triad region of the state, the town had a population of 1,937 at the 2020 census. The settlement was founded in 1792 and was later named Yanceyville in honor of U.S. Congressman Bartlett Yancey, Jr., when chartered as an incorporated town in 1833. There are three public schools in Yanceyville as well as a satellite campus for Piedmont Community College. Maud F. Gatewood Municipal Park and Caswell Community Arboretum are popular recreational areas. Yanceyville Municipal Airport serves general aviation aircraft. Ruffin is an unincorporated community located in Rockingham County, North Carolina. It is northeast of Reidsville, North Carolina, and southwest of Danville, Virginia, just off US 29 (future Interstate 785). It has a population of 419. Eden is a city in Rockingham County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Eden is the largest city in Rockingham County and is part of the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area of the Piedmont Triad metro region. John Pelham (officer)
John Pelham (September 7, 1838 – March 17, 1863) was a soldier who served with the Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart during the American Civil War. He was called "The Gallant Pelham" by Robert E. Lee for his use of light artillery at Fredericksburg to significantly delay Union soldiers during the Civil War. Early life Pelham was the third of seven children, with five brothers and a sister Betty, born to Dr. Atkinson and Martha Pelham ( née McGehee ) at his grandparents' home along Cane Creek near Alexandria, Alabama. He grew up on the family's plantation, and learned to raise horses at a young age.
