Pekin, Iowa
Pekin is a small unincorporated community in northwestern Jefferson County, Iowa, United States. History The Burlington and Western Railway arrived in Pekin in late 1882. This was a narrow gauge line, widened to standard gauge in 1902 and taken over by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and then sold to the Minneapolis and St. Louis in 1934. Pekin's population was 32 in 1902. In 1909, Pekin was just one city block with a church and 14 vacant lots, a vacant block north of the Depot and passing siding. The lack of development may be due to the fact that Pekin was not much more than a mile (2 km) northwest of Linby, a village founded in 1902 at the point where a new Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul line crossed the Burlington and Western. Farson is an unincorporated community in Competine Township in northeastern Wapello County, Iowa, United States. The community is located four miles south of Martinsburg on the Farson Road. Martinsburg is a city in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 110 at the time of the 2020 census. The only businesses open to the public in Martinsburg is McBeth Wrecker and Auto Service and a gas station/convenience store. History In 1861, Martinsburg was a half-mile long row of houses mostly on the north side of the road. In 1874, Martinsburg had two general stores, a hotel, and a Presbyterian church. Hedrick is a city in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 728 at the time of the 2020 census. History In 1882, the Burlington and Western Railway a narrow gauge line, and its competitor, the Iowa Central Railway, built competing east–west lines through the area. Pekin Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Pekin, an unincorporated area in Jefferson County, Iowa, near Packwood. It serves the following incorporated communities in Jefferson, Keokuk, Wapello, and Washington counties: Packwood, Hedrick, Martinsburg, Ollie, and Richland. Unincorporated areas served by Pekin schools, aside from Pekin, include Abington, Highland Center, and Rubio. History The school facilities were built on a former runway that was once used to train pilots. In 1986 there was a proposal to merge the Pekin district and the Hedrick Community School District.
