It is a photoautotrophic, nonmotile coenobial (fixed number of cells) green algae that inhabits freshwater environments. Morphology ''Pediastrum'' is a genus usually lo ...''. They form nonmotile coenobia (colonies) with a fixed number of cells. These coenobia are flat and have a circular shape. The cell bodies are polygonal, are granulated and have horn-like projections. They reproduce these autocolonies asexually. The colonies usually contain 8 to 32 cells, with examples of 4, 64 or 128 occurring rarely. Franz Meyen
Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen (28 June 1804 – 2 September 1840) was a Prussian physician and botanist. Meyen was born in Tilsit, East Prussia. In 1830 he wrote ''Phytotomie'', the first major study of plant anatomy. Between 1830 and 1832, he took part in an expedition to South America on board the ''Prinzess Luise'', visiting Peru and Bolivia, describing species then new to science such as the Humboldt penguin. From 1823 to 1826, he studied medicine at the University of Berlin, followed by service as a military surgeon at the Charité in Berlin. In 1834 he became an associate professor of botany in Berlin. Ralfs
John Ralfs (13 September 1807 – 14 July 1890) was an English botanist. Born in Millbrook, near Southampton, he was the second son of Samuel Ralfs, a yeoman of an old family in Hampshire. He has been commemorated in the names of many plant groups and taxa at many levels. Early life and education Ralfs's father died at Mudeford near Christchurch before John was a year old, and the children (two sons and two daughters) were brought up at Southampton by their mother. After being educated privately he was articled to his uncle, a surgeon of Brentford, with whom he lived for two years and a half. For two years he was a pupil at Winchester Hospital, and in 1832 he passed his final examination, being specially recommended by the examiners for his knowledge of botany. The green algae (singular: green alga) are a group consisting of the Prasinodermophyta and its unnamed sister which contains the Chlorophyta and Charophyta/Streptophyta. The land plants (Embryophytes) have emerged deep in the Charophyte alga as sister of the Zygnematophyceae. Since the realization that the Embryophytes emerged within the green algae, some authors are starting to properly include them. The completed clade that includes both green algae and embryophytes is monophyletic and is referred to as the clade Viridiplantae and as the kingdom Plantae. ''Pediastrum'' is a genus of green algae, in the family Hydrodictyaceae. It is a photoautotrophic, nonmotile coenobial (fixed number of cells) green algae that inhabits freshwater environments. Morphology ''Pediastrum'' is a genus usually look like a green star in the pond or lake. They are coenobial green algae composed of 22 to 27 cells, which are orderly arranged in a circular, flat disk. The diameter of a single coenobium can range from 20 to 80 μm, so they belong to the group of microalgae. Cells in ''Pediastrum'' can be divided into interior cells and peripheral cells by position in the coenobium or their shapes. Some of the species have intracellular cell spaces between interior cells, while some would closely aggregate together. Timothy John Entwisle
Timothy John Entwisle (born 1960), is an Australian botanist, much of whose research work is in phycology (algae). See for example the articles. He was awarded a Ph.D. from La Trobe University in 1986 for work on the taxonomy of ''Vaucheria''. He was New South Wales’ Government Botanist in 2007 and 2008, and for eight years was the executive director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney (2003–2011). Subsequently, he was director of Conservation, Living Collections and Estates, Kew, London from 2011, and since 2013 he has been director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Historically, the plant kingdom encompassed all living things that were not animals, and included algae and fungi; however, all current definitions of Plantae exclude the fungi and some algae, as well as the prokaryotes (the archaea and bacteria).
