Peaceful River (Alaska)
The Peaceful River is a remote stream located on the east side of Attu Island, Alaska that was named by the United States Army during its occupation of the island in World War II. The stream originates from its headwaters at North Pass and flows eastward from there, eventually crossing under Attu Airfield where shortly thereafter it discharges into the Pacific Ocean. The river is a known habitat for multiple bird and fish species native to Attu island. In 1983 a nest of black-backed wagtails was discovered under a dilapidated wooden bridge on the river. This, along with another nest discovered on Attu, represented the first successful nesting records for the subspecies in Alaska. The Peaceful River is also a known habitat for various species of salmon. A survey conducted on the island determined that pink salmon were the dominant species in the river with 33,042 fish being observed in the river. Culvert
A culvert is a structure that channels water past an obstacle or to a subterranean waterway. Typically embedded so as to be surrounded by soil, a culvert may be made from a pipe, reinforced concrete or other material. Pink Salmon
Pink salmon or humpback salmon (''Oncorhynchus gorbuscha'') is a species of anadromous fish in the salmon family. It is the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon. The scientific species name is based on the Russian common name for this species ''gorbúša'' (горбуша), which literally means ''humpie''. Description In the ocean, pink salmon are bright silver fish. After returning to their spawning streams, their coloring changes to pale grey on the back with yellowish-white belly (although some turn an overall dull green color). As with all salmon, in addition to the dorsal fin, they also have an adipose fin. The fish is characterized by a white mouth with black gums, no teeth on the tongue, large oval-shaped black spots on the back, a v-shaped tail, and an anal fin with 13-17 soft rays. Black-backed Wagtail
The white wagtail (''Motacilla alba'') is a small passerine bird in the family Motacillidae, which also includes pipits and longclaws. The species breeds in much of Europe and the Asian Palearctic and parts of North Africa. It has a toehold in Alaska as a scarce breeder. It is resident in the mildest parts of its range, but otherwise migrates to Africa. In Ireland and Great Britain, the darker subspecies, the pied wagtail or water wagtail (''M. a. yarrellii'') predominates; this is also called in Ireland willie wagtail, not to be confused with the Australian species ''Rhipidura leucophrys'' which bears the same common name. Attu Airfield
Casco Cove Coast Guard Station was a military facility and private use airfield on Attu Island, one of the Aleutian Islands in the U.S. state of Alaska. Owned by the United States Coast Guard, Casco Cove CGS is located west of Anchorage, Alaska. Also known as LORAN Station Attu, the facility was closed on August 27, 2010, but the airfield remains available for emergency use. History Established as Naval Air Facility Attu on June 7, 1943, just seven days after Attu Island was declared secured. The base was built by Seabees of the Naval Construction Battalion 4.
