Pavilhão Victorino Cunha, formerly Pavilhão do CODENM a.k.a. Pavilhão do Rio Seco is the Arena of Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto, mainly used for its Men's and Women's basketball teams. The arena is located in the uptown neighborhood of Maianga. On August 1, 2013, on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto, the club honored the mentor of the basketball development in the club, Victorino Cunha, by renaming the main basketball arena as Pavilhão Victorino Cunha. Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto is an Angolan men's basketball team based in Luanda. The team is part of the multi-sports club with the same name. The club is attached to the Angolan Armed Forces which is its main sponsor. The team competes at the local level at the Luanda Provincial Basketball Championship and at the BIC Basket. In the past, it has played in the Africa Basketball League competitions. Primeiro de Agosto is the most decorated team in Africa and holds the record of titles won in the African Basketball Club Champions League with nine championships, their last one being in 2019. Maianga
Maianga is one of the six municipalities of the administrative division of the province of Luanda, Angola. In 2011, as part of a restructuring of Luanda's regional government, the municipality was designated as one of Luanda's six urban districts. The area is one of the older quarters of Luanda and was established before independence. The area is best known for Quatro de Fevereiro Airport and its strong musical culture. History The name Maianga comes from the word Kimbundu Mazanga which means ponds. Before being urbanized, Maianga was an area known as a place that was routinely submerged by rainwater. Clube Desportivo 1º de Agosto is a multisports club from Luanda, Angola. The club, founded 1 August 1977, is attached to the Angolan armed forces, which is its sponsor. Its main team competes in men's football, and its professional basketball team is also noteworthy within the club. The club's colors are red and black. The club won its first title in football, the Angolan League, in 1979. and in basketball in 1980. Handball and Volleyball have also won many titles to the club. The Primeiro de Agosto Sports Club has its football team competing at the local level, in the events organized by the Angolan Football Federation, namely the Angolan National Football Championship a.k.a. Victorino Cunha
Victorino Eugénio da Silva e Cunha, (born April 18, 1945 in Mogofores, Portugal) is a former basketball player and basketball coach. While being born in Portugal, he moved to Angola at the age of 3. Cunha, who coached the Angola National team to win three African titles, in 1989, 1992 and 1993, in addition to coaching the same team at the world championships in 1986, 1990 and 1994 and the 1992 Summer Olympics, is widely regarded as the forefather of Angolan basketball and the mastermind behind all the success achieved by the sports in Angola. While losing 48-116 to the US Dream Team in the 1992 Summer Olympics may be considered normal due to the huge differences in both teams, Cunha is also remembered to have led Angola to an historical 20-point lead win over Spain, in the same tournament.
