Paussus
''Paussus'' is a genus of ground beetles in the family Carabidae. There are more than 360 described species in ''Paussus'', found in Africa, Europe, and Asia. These beetles, along with others in the subfamily Paussinae, are known as flanged bombardier beetles due to their ability to explosively discharge benzoquinones, chemical irritants, at temperatures between 55° and 100 °C. A flange on their elytra assists in directing the chemicals toward the front of their bodies. All species of this genus are obligate myrmecophiles, living symbiotically in ant nests. The beetles release chemicals the ants find rewarding, and in return receive protection for themselves and their larvae. The beetles also gain a source of food in the relationship—the ants. Female ''Paussus'' lay their eggs in ant nests. The larvae develop in the nest and are apparently fed by the ants. Adult ''Paussus'' feed at will by piercing and holding an ant with their mandibles and feeding by suction. A ...

Interactions Between Paussus Favieri And Queen Of Pheidole Pallidula
Interaction is action that occurs between two or more objects, with broad use in philosophy and the sciences. It may refer to: Science * Interaction hypothesis, a theory of second language acquisition * Interaction (statistics) * Interactions of actors theory, created by cybernetician Gordon Pask * Fundamental interaction, in physics * Human–computer interaction * Social interaction between people Biology * Biological interaction * Cell–cell interaction * Drug interaction * Gene–environment interaction * Protein–protein interaction Chemistry * Aromatic interaction * Cation-pi interaction * Metallophilic interaction Arts and media * ''Interaction'' (album), 1963, by Art Farmer's Quartet * ACM ''Interactions'', a magazine published by the Association for Computing Machinery * "Interactions" (''The Spectacular Spider-Man''), an episode of the animated television series * 63rd World Science Fiction Convention The 63rd World Science Fiction Convention ( ...

Ground Beetle
Ground beetles are a large, cosmopolitan distribution, cosmopolitan family (biology), family of beetles, the Carabidae, with more than 40,000 species worldwide, around 2,000 of which are found in North America and 2,700 in Europe. As of 2015, it is one of the 10 most species-rich animal families. They belong to the Adephaga. Members of the family are primarily carnivorous, but some members are phytophagous or omnivorous. Description and ecology Although their body shapes and coloring vary somewhat, most are shiny black or metallic and have ridged wing covers (elytra). The elytra are fused in some species, particularly the large Carabinae, rendering the beetles unable to fly. The species ''Mormolyce phyllodes'' is known as violin beetle due to their peculiarly shaped elytra. All carabids except the quite primitive flanged bombardier beetles (Paussinae) have a groove on their arthropod leg, fore leg tibiae bearing a comb of hairs used for cleaning their antenna (biology), antennae. ...

Myrmecophile
Myrmecophily ( , ) is the term applied to positive interspecies associations between ants and a variety of other organisms, such as plants, other arthropods, and fungi. Myrmecophily refers to mutualistic associations with ants, though in its more general use, the term may also refer to commensal or even parasitic interactions. The term "myrmecophile" is used mainly for animals that associate with ants. An estimated 10,000 species of ants (Formicidae) are known, with a higher diversity in the tropics.B. Holldobler and E.O. Wilson, The Ants, Cambridge, Massachusetts: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1990. In most terrestrial ecosystems, ants are ecologically and numerically dominant, being the main invertebrate predators. As a result, ants play a key role in controlling arthropod richness, abundance, and community structure.K. Fiedler, B. Holldobler, and P. Seufert, "Butterflies and ants: The communicative domain," Cellular and molecular life sciences, vol. 52, 1996 ...
